Four cities – Budapest, Milan, London, and Paris – are recommended holiday destinations by Worldhotels’ astrologers.
Asia and the United States are tied for second place, with three holiday destinations making the list. Two of Asia’s holiday destinations – Osaka, Japan, and Singapore – are urban centres. The third is a relatively little known beach resort in Malaysia called Kota Kinabalu.
The United States has two beach resorts and no major cities making the list. In addition to Honolulu, Hawai’i, and Miami Beach, Florida, is gaming capital Las Vegas, Nevada, always popular with both Americans and foreign tourists.
Rounding out the 12 recommended travel destinations for 2011 is Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It is the only city in the Southern Hemisphere to be recommended by the astrologers at Worldhotels..
Interestingly, seven of the recommended travel destinations are major cities, which offer cultural attractions, fine dining, shopping, and entertainment. Three are beach resorts, replete with palm trees, dining al fresco, and outdoor leisure activties. And one – Las Vegas – is a mecca for gambling and entertainment.
Sagittarius – 23 November – 21 December
If you are a Sagittarius, you are open minded, positive, and restless. You always want to discover new things and countries. So what about Singapore? If you haven’t been to the Lion City yet, you are in for a big surprise. You will find heritage architecture along the river and Mother Nature in all her glory in Fort Canning Park. But the big draw this season is Marina Bay, with its wide array of restaurants and entertainment options.
Where to Stay: The Hotel Fort Canning
Capricorn – 22 December – 20 January
Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Stable and of fond of tradition, Capricorns prefer peaceful settings to crowded destinations, the astrologers at Worldhotels say. So that rules out Hong Kong. If you were born under this sign, chances are you enjoy nature. So what about Kota Kinabala in Malaysia? In the shadows of Mount Kinabalu, Kinabalu Park offers mountain climbing, beach combing, and boating.
Where to Stay: Sutera Harbour Resort
Aquarius – 21 January – 19 February
Aquarius is the most unconventional and extroverted among the 12 signs of the Zodiac, Worldhotels informs, loving “everything extraordinary, be it fancy food, architecture, or fashion” – sounds a bit like the Accidental Travel Writer,” if you ask me. So stroll down the Champs-Elysées, browsing through the fashionable boutiques and stopping to savour coffee at one of the many sidewalk cafés.
Where to Stay: Édouard 7 Hotel
Pisces – 20 February – 19 March
Pisces are described as “very sensitive and introvert individuals” that have a difficult time expressing their feelings. Since they prefer peaceful destinations and don’t like crowds, Worldhotels recommends Honolulu, Hawai’i. Okay… Not sure if the astrologer writing this has ever been to Waikiki Beach when school is out in California, but the Accidental Travel Writer believes that one of the neighbor islands – say Kaua’i, perhaps – might be a better fit for someone that doesn’t like crowds.
Where to Stay: Pacific Beach Hotel
Aries – 20 March – 20 April
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Aries are active, and they like exotic locales, so Worldhotels recommends a Cidade Maravilhosa, or the Marvelous City, as Rio is known em Portugués. Having been to Rio once many years ago, the Accidental Travel Writer would love to tag along – if only the flight from Hong Kong to Brazil were so long – not to mention expensive.
Where to Stay: Rio Othon Palace
Taurus – 21 April – 21 May
According to Worldhotels, the Taurus loves things that are beautiful – for the eyes as well as the taste buds. So what better place than the Capital of Cool? You’ll find beautiful art in the museums, beautiful music on the West End, and beautiful food in the stylish restaurants that dot the city.
Where to Stay: Royal Garden Hotel
Gemini – 22 May – 21 June
Gemini is described by Worldhotels as “curious, communicative, and flexible”. The group recommends Stockholm not so much for the city’s attractions as for the hotel it says he or she should stay in because it offers “a mix of different activities”. There is an Asian restaurant, a terrace with great views in the summer, a trendy nightclub, and one of the Swedish capital’s most famous venues for concerts.
Where to Stay: Berns Hotel
Cancer – 22 June – 22 July
Cancers are romantics at heart, and they also have a soft spot for music and the arts. Worldhotels’ astrologers recommend Milan, arguably the world’s number one centre for design. While there, Cancers can also take in the Italian Gothic churches, enjoy opera at Teatro alla Scala, and feast on all that yummy – if calorific – Italian fare.
Where to Stay: Hotel Milano Scala
Leo – 23 July – 23 August
Las Vegas, Nevada
The last time the Accidental Travel Writer was in Las Vegas, he was eight years old, and he loved it, but he has heard that it has changed a bit over the decades. Whatever … Leos like excitement, and they will find it on many levels – from the casinos to the shows to what one Frenchman once said were “the best restaurants in the United States.
Where to Stay: ARIA Resort and Casino
Virgo – 24 August – 23 September
Miami Beach, Florida
Worldhotels describes Virgos as “discerning and critical individuals,” and the Accidental Travel Writer (who is one) pleads guilty as charged. We do select our holiday destinations carefully, and this Virgo, at least, absolutely loves Art Deco (not to mention beaches, sunshine, and palm trees) so Miami Beach does seem like the perfect holiday destination.
Where to Stay: Sagamore – The Art Hotel
Libra – 24 September – 23 October
Elegance, taste, and charming personalities – this is how Worldhotels describes Libras. It suggests Budapest – with its mix of cultural highlights such as the UNESCO-World Heritage Sites ‘Buda Castle Quarter’ and ‘Gellert Bath and Hill’ – as this year’s top travel destination for those born under this sign.
Where to Stay: Continental Hotel Zara
Scorpio – 24 October – 22 November
Osaka, Japan If Scorpios like everything “new and exotic,” we can understand Japan. But Osaka? Why not Tokyo? Oh, well. You’ll have to ask the astrologers at Worldhotels about this one.
