Scaling Mount Everest to Promote Responsible Tourism

World travel market world responsible tourism day Gavin Bates failed five times in his attempt to scale Mount Everest.

Undaunted, Gavin kept trying, and the Managing Director of Adventure Alternative finally made it to the top of the world’s highest mountain – complete with a poster promoting World Travel Market World Responsible Tourism Day – on his sixth try.

"It was an amazing feeling,” Gavin says. "You can see the curvature of the Earth, the sky is black because you can see space. Your brain can't quite compute the height that you're at. You're just beside yourself with emotion.”

World Responsible Tourism Day

Gavin has been a keen supporter of WTM World Responsible Tourism Day since it was launched five years ago to educate, motivate, and inspire travel companies to engage in year-round responsible tourism activity.

Gavin, aged 45, came within 250 metres of the summit of Mount Everest on each of his first five attempts to conquer the peak.

“By getting to the top of Everest, Gavin has joined an extremely elite international club of climbers,” says Fiona Jeffery, chairman of World Travel Market and a pioneer of the responsible tourism movement.

Three Day Event

“But by promoting WTM World Responsible Tourism Day at the summit, he demonstrated that responsible tourism is indeed scaling new heights."

World Responsible Tourism Day – which is actually a three day event – will comprise a programme of presentations, debates, seminars, and a networking reception at the World Travel Market in London in November 2011.
