Rubbing Shoulders with Traders from Africa and the Middle East

Wandering west down Huanshi Road East from the Crowne Plaza Guangzhou City Centre, we passed through a tunnel and stumbled across an alleyway called Hanbaozhi Road.

In addition to Han Chinese, there were traders from Africa and the Middle East, as well as Uighurs from China’s Xinjiang Province.

In addition to shops selling cheap goods were all manner of cafes, restaurants, and bars. It was a very cosmopolitan ambiance.

My companion and I settled upon the Muslim Restaurant at 41 Hanbaozhi Road (Tel: 02-13580485959). The there was an entire wall lined with pictures of fascinating dishes.

The clientèle was incredibly diverse, and the food was tasty and filling. I fantasized that we were rubbing shoulders with traders along the Silk Road.
