London: Notting Hill Carnival to Go Ahead on Sunday

All eyes are on London as the city gears up for the Notting Hill Carnival, which will be held as scheduled on Sunday and Monday 28 and 29 August 2011 under heavy police guard.

One of Europe’s biggest street parties, the Notting Hill Carnival attracts massive crowds. But there were questions about whether the event should be held in the wake of the rioting that rocked London and other English cities earlier this month.

Fully 5,500 police officers will be on duty Sunday, with 1,000 more on Monday, which is a bank holiday in Britain. This is also when the main parade will take place through the streets of London.

Social Media

One of the questions everyone is asking is what impact social media will play in either maintaining the peace or fueling violence during the two day event.

The Notting Hill Carnival ended in a full scale riot in 1976, with pitched battles between black and white youths, resulting from simmering racial tension in the racially mixed neighborhood.
