Mexican Food
Yesterday was my birthday, and I was taken to Tequila Jack’s, a Mexican restaurant in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui district.
I had never eaten at Tequila Jack’s before, but a close Chinese friend (who loves Mexican food) said that he had stumbled across the place a short while back, and he really liked the food.
My expectations weren’t high because I’m usually disappointed when I try Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong. But I like Mexican food so much – it’s my comida favorita – that I’m willing to “use my imagination” and just fantasize about the way it is supposed to taste.
All I can say is, that wasn’t necessary. I was very pleasantly surprised! The food was muy deliciosa!
Margaritas
I am not usually impressed with margaritas in Hong Kong (even my vivid imagination doesn’t help!). I ordered one at one of the city’s classiest hotels a few years back. They forgot the limes. On another occasion, I ordered one at this snooty high end bistro. It was made with Rose’s Lime Juice rather than fresh limes!
Not sure if you’re familiar with Rose’s Lime Juice, but it’s very thick and very sweet, and it did NOT go well with the salt on the rim of the glass!!! I refused to drink it and asked for a rum and Coke.
Okay, the margaritas at Tequila Jack’s were not the best I’ve ever had, but they were acceptable. I’m not complaining. By Hong Kong standards, they were definitely above average, and I would order one again.
El Grande Beef Nachos
OMG! At HK$105.99 (roughly US$14), the nachos were not cheap, but they were – dare I say it? – among the best I have ever had. The tortilla chips appeared to be home made, both very thin and very crispy.
There was mixed cheese, roasted red peppers, jalepeno peppers, Anaheim chiles, Tapa del Aquayon, and strips of yummy marinated beef – were there hints of mole in that marinade?
A well nuanced salsa with just the right amount of heat, sour cream, and guacamole were served on the side.
Mojitos
I’m new to mojitos as I left the United States before they became popular so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I tried one for the first time about one week ago.
I had them at two of the five star hotels I stayed at recently in Foshan, China, and I liked them. So we ordered them to accompany our second course, combination fajitas.
Wow! The mojitos at the InteContinental Foshan were good, the mojitos at the Swissotel Foshan were better, and the mojitos at Tequila Jack’s in Hong Kong (pictured above, that’s me holding one) were the best!
I’m not sure what that green stuff is (is it mint, by any chance?), but there was lots of it. The mojitos were nice and tart, with lots of lime – just the way I like my cocktails.
Fajitas Dos Hombres
For our second course, we chose Fajitas Dos Hombres, a combination of marinated and grilled Beef Espaldilla and grilled chicken marinated in lime.
At HK$139.00 (roughly US$18), these were even more extravagant than the nachos, but the serving was generous. The beef was tender and rare, and the chicken very well seasoned. There were eight tortillas, and the salsa, guacamole, and sour cream were served on the side.
Verdict
Would I go back to Tequila Jack’s? Absolutely. Tequila Jack’s is my new indulgence. On my next visit, I will try to round up more people. I just hope that the standards can be maintained.
Insider’s Tip
When should you go? On Tuesdays. From 5 pm to 2 am, tacos are HK$9.99 (roughly US$1.30) and beer and margaritas are HK$29 (roughly US$3.70) from 3 pm to 9 pm.
