Macau: World’s Largest Holiday Inn Overlooks Cotai Strip

Hotels and Resorts

Last week’s grand opening of the Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central and the Conrad Macao, Cotai Central, was billed as Asia’s largest Launch Party of the year.

There was a high wire act, with sky walker Jade Kindar-Martin making his way from The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel across the Cotai Strip to the Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central along a 500 foot high, less than one inch thick, 1,700 foot long wire.

Jade’s wife, Karine Mauffrey, was to meet him approximately one fourth of the way “to engage in a key moment of Sands Cotai Central’s opening ceremony”. Unfortunately, winds made her lose her nerve and, following a brief exchange with her husband, Karine turned around and made her way back to the roof of the Holiday Inn.

Other acts included performances by the China National Symphony Orchestra, Chinese tenors Warren Mok, Dai Yuqiang, and Wei Song, Hong Kong Canto-pop star Hacken Lee, Chinese soprano Bing Bing Wang, and mezzo-soprano Sonia Maria Fortunato.

Sheraton to Open Early Next Year

A Sheraton, which is adjacent to the two hotels, will open early next year, completing the three hotel Sands Cotai Central complex, which also includes 1.2 million square feet of dining, entertainment, and retail facilities as well as space for meetings and conventions. There are also health clubs, spas, and swimming pools.

The Holiday Inn and the Conrad share the same 39 storey tower, which was originally going to house a Shangri-La. The Sheraton, which is still under construction, will adjoin the other two hotels, occupying its own tower.

More Than 9,000 Rooms

The three hotels will have a combined total of nearly 5,800 rooms. With more than 1,200 rooms, the Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central is the largest Holiday Inn in the world. The Conrad Macao, Cotai Central, has more than 600 rooms. The Sheraton Macao Hotel, Cotai Central, will have nearly 4,000 rooms, making it the largest hotel in Macau to date.

Sands Cotai Central is located across the street from the Venetian Sands and the Four Seasons. When the Sheraton Hotel Macao Cotai Central opens next year, Sands China will have more than 9,000 rooms and suites, 1.3 million square feet of meeting and convention space, more than 90 different food and beverage outlets, almost 600 retail shops, and 920,000 square feet of space for gambling in the former Portuguese enclave.

More than 500 journalists from as far away as Spain were flown in for the event.
