Michael Taylor’s 21 day Balinese adventure ended in real time about one week ago, and it is now winding down in Cyberspace, as well. Today he reminisces about the penultimate resort that he stayed at in Bali, Viceroy Bali, which is located on the outskirts of Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, the Island of Gods.
Weddings, Honeymoons, Anniversaries
Of all the hotels and resorts that I stayed at on this trip, and there were 10, this one – Viceroy Bali – was by far the most romantic. It also offered by far the most authentically traditional Balinese experience – at least from an aesthetic point of view.
Poised atop a ridge, Viceroy Bali comprised 25 private villas, which cascaded down a slope. Each one had a thatched roof. On the other side of a lush valley were bamboo and coconut palms and banana trees.
I stayed in a Deluxe Terrace Villa. There were 1,500 square feet of indoor living space (about twice the size of my flat in Hong Kong) as well as a terrace with a plunge pool deep enough to stand up in and a Balinese style balé – a covered, open air pavilion.

Some hotels or resorts try to be all things to all people. Other hotels and resorts have a clearly defined niche market. The Viceroy Bali falls into the latter category, and mass market tourism is most definitely not a part of its business model.
“Most guests are couples on honeymoons or anniversaries,” explains Lely Elfrida, Public Relations Manager, Viceroy Bali.
“We can accept children, but families are not really our target market. We are not a family friendly hotel.”
Viceroy Bali offers wedding packages, with special rates for guests attending the wedding, honeymoon packages, and anniversary packages.
CasCades, the open air restaurant, can handle wedding receptions for up to 80 guests and sit down banquets for up to 60.
A wedding chapel and 11 additional villas – there are currently 25 – will come on line in the first half of 2013.
Can you imagine spending your honeymoon at such a place?
