Sports: Raiders Fan Convention Heads to Baja Oakland (a.k.a. San Diego)

American Football

The first ever Raiders Fan Convention South will be held in San Diego, a.k.a. Baja Oakland, on 17 August 2013. A Raiders Fan Convention will be held in Northern California on 26 October 2013.

Raiders Fan Convention South will be held at the American Legion Post 731 at 7245 Linda Vista Road in San Diego, California, on Saturday 17 August from 11 am to 5 pm.

So why a Raiders Fan Convention in San Diego, which theoretically has a football team of its own? San Diego has an exceptionally large fan base of Oakland Raiders fans – which has led at least one sports writer at the San Diego Tribune to christen the town “Baja Oakland”.

I kid you not. I read that in the San Diego Tribune when I was in town to root for the Oakland Raiders a few years back!

“We have had the Raiders Fan Convention since 2008 in Oakand each year,” says Mike Sommers, Co-founder of the Raiders Fan Convention. “We know that many in So Cal cannot make it up to Oakland to join us for the Raiders Fan Convention, so we decided throw one in So Cal, as well.”

Here’s the Scoop

Superbowl Champions Greg Townsend and Mike Davis will be at the Raiders Fan Convention. They will be joined by Gorilla Rilla, the Violator, and Toozak.

The Hazmat Boyz and 4 Dub will perform. The ultimate Raider Ride-High Roller Raider and the Black Sunday factory van will be there. And the Silver and Black Angel Foundation will have a huge raffle and silent auction.

“We are teamed up with the Original Raiders Fan Club of San Diego (ORFCSD) to make this a fantastic event and give you locals the chance to become a member,” says Mike Sommers, Co-founder of the Raiders Fan Convention .

The two storey facility has two bars, six bathrooms, two pool tables, and a dartboard. Food will be available.

What They’re Saying

“I live behind enemy lines in San Diego … of course, I can’t wait to be there!!!” says one San Diego fan of the Oakland Raiders.

“Rooms are booked!!! We are ready to party!” says an Oakland Raiders fan that’s traveling in from out of town.

“Ready or not, Choke Town here we come,” says yet another out of town Oakland Raiders fan.

Where to Stay

The  Town and Country hotel at 500 Hotel Circle, San Diego, California, is offering Oakland Raider fans rooms for just US$99 a night. Make sure to tell them you’re there for the convention when you reserve your hotel room.

Where to Eat

There’s a rumour that Fred’s Mexican Café at 2470 San Diego Avenue in Old Town, San Diego, not only has great Mexican food. It is also “friendly” to the Oakland Raiders and their fans.

You might want the check the place out while you’re in Baja Oakland!
