Australia: 1.4 Million Expected to Attend Sydney Events This Weekend

Record crowds are expected to attend the International Fleet Review, the NRL Grand Final, and other events being held in and around Sydney, Australia, this weekend. It will result in a A$50 million boost to the New South Wales economy.

Bars, cafés, restaurants, and hotels are expected to benefit from the festivities, which will see one of the city's largest influxes of tourists and travelers since the Sydney Olympics.

“Sydney is the place to be this weekend – once again confirming our city as the home of major events and Australia’s only global city,” says New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell.

International Fleet Review

“We’re expecting about 1.4 million people to attend these hotly-anticipated events, ranging from the International Fleet Review on Sydney Harbour, the NRL Grand Final and Parramasala Festival in Western Sydney, Spring Carnival Racing at Royal Randwick, and the Manly Jazz Festival.”  ​

The weekend's highlght will be the International Fleet Review, which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy's arrival in Sydney Harbour.

There will be a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night. Prince Harry will be in attendance.

A$1.2 Billion Windfall

“The NSW Government has secured 184 events since March 2011,” says Minister for Major Events George Souris.

“It is estimated these events will deliver A$1.2 billion of visitor spend, reclaiming our status as the major events capital of Australia.”
