Thailand: a Big Thumb's Up for Koh Samui's Fisherman's Village!

Koh Samui Travelogue Part 4

Michael Taylor spends three nights at Hansar Samui , a boutique resort on Bophut Beach on Koh Samui, an island located in Southern Thailand. It adjoins Fisherman’s Village, which Michael gives a big Thumb’s Up!

Fisherman’s Village is a former Sino-Thai fishing village that has evolved into one of Koh Samui’s top tourist attractions.

There are numerous restaurants and cafés, pubs and bars, guest houses and souvenir shops, mini marts and foreign exchange outlets. What you won’t find, however, are girly bars and strip joints. There’s not a pole dancer in sight!

Food and beverage outlets run from fine dining restaurants serving haute cuisine to tapas bars to the simply named The Mexican Restaurant, where I downed two killer mojitos.

Almost all of the eateries are open air, and many of them overlook the beach. Some have live entertainment.

Beachfront Night Club

The only night club, if you can call it that, that I saw was Coconut Cuisine, an open air collection of beach chairs and tables set up right on the sand. Beverages and snacks were prepared in a hut with a thatched roof.

When I returned after dark, I saw that lighting was supplied by candles placed in brown paper bags placed on the sand.

Music was blaring from loud speakers with images displayed on the silver screen. It doesn’t get more funkier than this.

There’s something organic about Fisherman’s Village. Renovated shop houses sit cheek and jowl with rustic bungalows and avant garde structures.

Eclectic Mix of Eateries

I was told that a concerted effort has been made to keep out the sleeze. Many of the businesses in fact, stop taking orders as early as 10.30 pm.

I stumbled across Fisherman’s Village during my three night stay at Hansar Samui, and I liked what I saw.

Fisherman’s Village was a welcome change of pace from Chaweng, the tropical island’s better known – and more notorious – tourism draw.
