Canada: Astronomers Check Out Dark Skies Over Jackson on Winter Solstice

Amateur and professional astronomers from around the world flew to Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, to witness the dark skies overhead on the Winter Solstice on 21 December 2013, the longest night of the year.

Nearly 16 and one-half hours of darkness gave amateur and professional star-gazers plenty of time to check out the celestial bodies in the skies over Jackson National Park on December 21, a.k.a. the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year.

The Royal Astronomical Society has officially recognized Jackson National Park as a Dark Sky Preserve.

Dark Sky Festival

The annual Dark Sky Festival is held in October every year. The 2014 festival will be held from 10 to 25 October in Jackson National Park in Alberta, Canada.

Canada's first astronaut to walk in space, Chris Hadfield, will be in attendance during the event. Visitors will be able to meet Chris during various events taking place over the course of the estival.

Chris will also host a private event held at a secret location in Jackson National Park on Saturday October 25 2014.
