Bali’s Hindu majority celebrated one of the most important holidays of the year yesterday, Tumpek Landep. They hung offerings on vehicles and prayed for the God of Heirlooms to sharpen their minds.
Celebrated once every 210 days, Tumpek Landep is one of the most important holy days on the Balinese calendar. On this day, Balinese Hindus pray to the God of Heirlooms to make them more intelligent.
Devotees put beautiful hand-made offerings on various types of metallic equipment. This includes motor vehicles and kitchen equipment, among other things. Ceremonies also take place in the home, in the yard, and at temple.
I am currently staying at the Swiss Belhotel Bay View in Nusa Dua. I took the complimentary hotel shuttle yesterday afternoon to the Bali Collection, a shopping mall within the gated section of Nusa Dua.
I noticed three beautiful hand made objects on the front of the vehicle that took me into town and back to my hotel: two placed at the foot of the windshield and a third hanging from the grille.
I am always amazed by the artistry displayed in these simple religious offerings.
