Travelogue: Boutique Hotel in Seminyak Offers One to One Guest to Butler Ratio

Balinese Adventure Part 37

Michael Taylor spends a total of 6 nights at a trendy hotel in Seminyak. If the hotel has a unique selling point (USP), it would have to be its friendly staff. The butler to guest ratio is one to one.

One of the advantages of returning to a hotel that you have already stayed at is that sense of coming home that you feel when members of staff greet you by name on arrival.

You know where the restaurants are, you know where the toilets are, you know where the swimming pool is – and in this case the swimming pool is just a few steps up from the lobby in one of the food and beverage outlets.

You even have those favourite dishes on the menu that you look forward to savouring again.

L Hotel is the only hotel on this trip that I have stayed at before, and I look forward to staying there again on my next trip to Bali. It really has become my home away from home in Bali.

Location.

L Hotel is located in Seminyak, which has Bali’s best shopping as well as numerous food and beverage outlets. Potato Head , Ku De Ta, and other popular clubs are located nearby.

You will find numerous boutiques, mini marts, and food and beverage outlets on the very same street as the hotel. Eating out options run from budget to fine dining. Several national cuisines are represented.

Best of all, a Pepito’s supermarket – with fresh produce, frozen goods, both local and international brands, and a good selection of wines and spirits – has opened a very short walk (just 2 or 3 minutes) from the hotel since my last stay 18 months ago.

Design

L Hotel was designed by renowned Indonesian architect Pop Danes and interior designer Meriem Hall. The neutral black and gray design is what I would describe as ‘tropical modern’.

The hotel is full of quirky touches such as the swimming pool in the food and beverage outlet off the lobby and the traditional Balinese carvings on the ceilings of guest rooms that are painted silver with a red background.

Butlers wear very trendy outfits with large safety pin fasteners. This hotel has a distinct personality that sets it apart from the competition.

Accommodation

The 19 Lifestyle Suites have either a king size bed or twin beds. Toilets are located in small ‘water closets’ with small sinks. Showers and sinks with spacious counter tops are located across the room.

There are 5 Legian Suites with views of the rice paddies. The 6 Luxe Suites have ‘couple friendly’ bathtubs in an open concept bathroom.

Of the 12 properties I stay at on this trip, L Hotel is one of the only ones with dimmer switches, allowing me to run the lights up so that I can work at my computer after dark.  At most of the other hotels, I have to ask housekeeping for supplemental lighting.

Also, because the windows have Venetian blinds, I am able to get sufficient indirect natural lighting during the day without having glare on my computer screen.

Butlers

The guest to butler ratio at L Hotel is one to one, and butlers are on duty 24/7. They can press your clothes (2 items complimentary per day), arrange transport, make restaurant reservations, and perform other services.

If you are lucky enough to stay in a Luxe Suite your butler can draw your bath for you.

Shuttle

The hotel can arrange transport within the Seminyak and Legian. It does not offer complimentary pick-up and drop-off service to and from the airport. Transport can be arranged, but you have to pay for it.

Swimming Pools

There are 2 swimming pools. An outdoor swimming pool with lounge chairs and a kiosk selling cold drinks is located a short walk from the hotel. It is perfect for doing laps.

Those that don’t want to get a sunburn might prefer swimming in the swimming pool just off the lobby. While open air, it does not get direct sunlight.

Food and Beverage

L Hotel has 6 food and beverage outlets serving everything from signature cocktails to Indonesian, Indian, Japanese, and international cuisine. Reviews are coming …

Spa and Fitness Centre

L’ Spa offers a full menu of spa treatments. Facilities include a simple gym. A review of the spa is coming …

Unique Selling Point

If the L Hotel Seminyak has a unique selling point, it would have to be its friendly staff. They are helpful and professional without being intrusive. They really do seem to enjoy their jobs.
