Fans from rival teams CAN get along, as this photo demonstrates!

Some games count more than others, and today's game between the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers is one of them.

Even when your team is 1 and 11 and doesn't have a chance of making the playoffs – not to mention the Super Bowl – there is still something known as 'bragging rights' – especially when the 2 teams share the same geographical turf.

And for Raiders fans throughout Northern California, defeating the 49ers at the Black Hole would go a long way toward salvaging what has so far been a dismal season – dare I say 'decade'?

If you don't believe me, just consider the delusional celebrations that broke out when the Raiders upset their old American Football League rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, a couple of weeks ago.

If you can win only one game, let it be a game against one of your arch rivals – especially if it might get in the way of their chances of making it into the playoffs.

Battle of the Bay

The Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers used to meet each summer in the Battle of the Bay. As a pre-season game, it had no impact on the standings. But it did mean a lot in terms of bragging rights in Northern California.

That's what happens when families, neighbours, and co-workers are split between 2 so-called 'local' teams.

The games between the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers were halted after violence broke out between the 2 NFL footbal teams at Candlestick Park in 2011.

There were 2 shootings, 2 assaults, and numerous fist fights both in the football stadium during the football game and in the stadium's parking lot after the football game ended.

Authorities announced last week that security at the Black Hole, a.k.a. the Oakland Coliseum, would be tightened for the football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiderson 7 December 2014.

Uniformed and under cover plainclothes police officers as well as private security officers will patrol the Black Hole's parking lots, tailgate areas, and the stadium itrself.

Raider Nation Pride

The Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers haven't played a regular season game since 2010. They haven't met at the Black Hole since 2002.

A Raider victory would do more than boost pride among members of the Raider Nation, which has remained fiercely loyal to their team through more than a decade of losing seasons.

A Raider victory could also help prevent the San Francisco 49ers, who are 7 and 5, from reaching the playoffs.

And something perhaps even more important is a stake: the future of the highly popular Battle of the Bay.

If there is no fan violence at today's football game, the yearly matchups between Oakland Raiders and their cross-bay football rivals might once again be one of the NFL's highlights of the pre-season in Northern California!

So tone it down, guys! Let's keep the violence on the field – not in the stands!
