Sports: Golden State Warriors to Wear Lunar New Year Uniforms at 4 Games

National Basketball Association

In recognition of the National Basketball Association’s massive fan base in China, the Golden State Warriors are the first of 2 NBA teams to wear Chinese themed uniforms during the Lunar New Year.

The Golden State Warriors will wear Chinese-themed uniforms when they take on the San Antonio Spurs on the second day of the Lunar New Year on Friday 20 February 2015.

The basketball game will be played at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, the basketball team’s current home.

The baskteball team will wear the Chinese New Year uniforms again on Tuesday 24 February when they take on the Washington Wizards at Verizon Center in Washington, DC, and on Monday, 2 when they take on the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The basketball franchise will wear their Chinese New Year uniforms for the final time during the 2014-15 season when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday 4 March at the Oracle Arena.

The games on 20 February and 4 March will be broadcast on China Central Television (CCTV) in China.

The Golden State Warriors have a massive fan base among Asian Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The National Basketball Association is also wildly popular in China.

“We have been working with the NBA for two years now on our Chinese New Year uniforms to recognize the tremendous fan base that our Asian community represents,” says Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts.

“Connecting with our Asian community is a priority for our organization and we are proud that we are going to be one of two teams in the NBA to debut a Chinese New Year themed uniform as a way to thank our fans here in the Bay Area and abroad in China.”

The Houston Rockets, who have a massive fan base in China, will also wear uniforms with a Chinese theme during Lunar New Year.

Comment and Analysis

Sounds like a sound move to me.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) was one of the first US brands to move into the Chinese market shortly after Deng Xiaoping announced plans to open up the country’s economy in late 1978, and – in retrospect – it was obviously a wise move.

The NBA has cultivated a massive fan base in the world’s most populous country.

As for the uniforms? I kind of like the short sleeves – though some critics say the covered shoulders restrict movement.

Whereas I love the look, I am confused by the colours. As cool as they appear, they neither reflect the Warriors’ colours, which are Blue and Gold, nor do they don’t look very Chinese.

Oh, well. Perhaps it’s an issue of fashion over function.
