China's growing middle class has a growing taste for travel, and the country will soon be the largest overseas source market for tourism in the United States, the U.S. Department of Commerce believes.
Move over Brazil, Britain, Germany, and Japan. China will be the largest overseas source market for inbound tourism in the United States by 2019.
The number of Chinese tourists visiting the United States between now and then will grow by 172%, the United States Department of Commerce believes. Only 2 North American countries – Canada and Mexico – will send more tourists to the Land of the Free than China.
According to US Department of Commerce projections, the number of Chinese tourists visiing the United States will increase to 3.1 million visitors by 2019, up from 2,340,000 visitors in 2014.
The number of Colombians visiting the United States will increase by 72%, followed by India, with 47%; Brazil, with 43%; and Mexico, with 38%.
While the increase in the number of Canadians visiting the United States will be relatively small – just 3% – Canada will remain the largest source of visitors in absolute terms, followed by Mexico, which will remain in 2nd place.
