Hotel Review – Ozo Chaweng Samui Offers Comfort Without the Fuss

Koh Samui Press Trip Part 3

Michael Taylor and several other Hong Kong based journalists are flown to Koh Samui, where they spend 3 nights at the Ozo Chaweng Samui. Michael likes it so much, he decides to spend a fourth night!

Ozo Chaweng Samui is a stylish resort where the focus is on comfort and convenience – without the fuss. Bathrooms, for example, have walk-in showers, but no bathtubs. Most hotel guests never use them. So why bother?

Following an informal buffet breakfast at our leisure, we are taken on the tour of the hotel.

With the exception of a handful of larger units, most of the rooms are compact – because the assumption is that guests will only sleep in them. Thus there is no room service.

Nor is there a spa. Again, why bother, when you can get a fabulous massage at an open air massage parlour on the beach? Or an indoor massage at many of the day spas which are situated within walking distance of the hotel?

But there is no scrimping on the beds at this hotel. The quality of the beds and bedding is right up there with the best 5 star resort.

The hotel’s decor has a smart, contemporary feel. The colour scheme is light beige with blue and green accents – and the occasional touch of chocolate brown with a hint of copper. Very stylish!

This scheme is repeated throughout the resort – from the exterior to the interior spaces.

Accommodation

The hotel has 208 guest rooms. Most of them sleep up to 2 adults. A few can accommodate up to 3 adults with a king size and a single bed. Some of the rooms can be linked together.

Rooms have the usual amenities. There are flat screen LCD TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a smallish work space. The bathrooms have walk in showers, but no bathtubs.

I stay in a standard room, which measures 25 square metres. Rooms in this category have twin or king size beds. They can sleep 2 adults. My room has a small balcony with a garden view.

Larger units – some with terraces and beach views – are also available. Measuring 32 square metres, they can sleep up to 3 adults. Some of them overlook the beach.

Food and Beverage

With 2 restaurants, 2 bars, and a grab-and-go service in the lobby, you won’t go hungry at Ovo Chaweng Samui.

Buffet breakfasts are served at Eat in the morning, with ala carte dining at lunch and dinner. Burgers, steaks, curries, seafood, pizzas – the food choices go on and on. And wait till you try those signature cocktails!

A restaurant review of  Stacked will follow in 2 weeks.

Facilities

The hotel faces a sandy beach, where you can work on your tan, frolic in the surf, or try your luck trying to climb atop the giant inflatables anchored several yards off shore (I was unsuccessful – unlike 3 of the others in my group).

There are 2 swimming pools: a free form swimming pool big enough to do laps in and a play pool for the kiddies. There is also a small gym with free weights and cardio-vascular equipment.

Other facilities include a web bar in the lobby and a meeting room that can accommodate up to 20 people.

Unique Selling Proposition

The hotel is located on Chaweng Beach Road, in the heart of one of Koh Samui’s most happening tourism districts. And yet …

The entrance to the hotel to the hotel is set back from the street. It is situated in such a way that when you get there to the lobby, you can’t see the street. Which  means …

The moment you step into the lobby, you’re in another world. You’d never know that 24 hour mini marts, day spas, clothing boutiques, and all manner of food and beverage outlets are right across the street and down the road.

These are the 2 things I liked best.

First, there are 24 hour mini-marts right across the street from the hotel. Second, there is an open air massage parlour next to the hotel (but not related to the hotel).
