A 24-storey vertical art gallery and lifestyle tower is under construction in Central on Hong Kong Island. Artworks commissioned by 10 local artists will grace the hoardings while the building is being built.
H Queen’s is currently under construction at 80 Queen’s Road Central on Hong Kong Island. The 24-storey multi-purpose structure is scheduled to open in mid-2017.
You’ve heard of vertical bar streets such a California Tower, a 27-storey skyscraper in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong district, which can house more than 90 restaurants, bars, night clubs, and lifestyle brands.
Not to be out done, Henderson Land is developing a 24 floor vertical art gallery. Located several blocks west at 80 Queen’s Road Central, the facility is scheduled to open in mid-2017.
To be known as H Queen’s, the multi-purpose building will house spaces for art exhibitions and offices. There will also be floors dedicated to retail and food and beverage.
A building maintenance unit will facilitate the smooth delivery of artwork and will include a custom-made mechanical system to protect valuable art pieces.
Commissioned Artworks
During construction, the hoarding surrounding the building will showcase a series of artworks commissioned by 10 Hong Kong artists.
With a theme of “Time and Space”, the first artworks will be unveiled on 21 March 2016.
On the Queen’s Road facade, Frog King, a.k.a. Kwok Mang Ho, will build a graffiti wall using his distinctive iconographical elements and his signature “sandwich font”, which switches back and forth between English and Chinese in clever ensembles that alternate between irony and parody.
On the Stanley Street façade, Lam Tung-pang, one of Hong Kong’s most highly regarded young artists, is making a large site-specific contemporary work that blends elements of old and new Hong Kong.
The Pottinger Street facade is a covered passage-way adjacent to HQ. This section will present the work of eight younger or emerging Hong Kong artists: Ho Sin Tung, Bosco Law, South Ho, Damon Tong, Esther Poon, Stanley Siu, Tony Ng, and Peggy Chan.
