More than 20,000 whales migrate past  the coast of New South Wales, Australia, during their annual migration between May and November. Where are the best spots to witness this amazing spectacle?

Whale watching season runs from May to November is New South Wales, Australia.

During this period, more than 20,000 whales make their annual migration past a 2,000 kilometre stretch of coastline of New South Wales between Tweed and Eden, attracting more than 237,000 eco-tourists.

There are numerous spots to witness this jaw-dropping spectacle along the coast of New South Wales: islands, lighthouses, lookouts, foreshores, and national parks.

A highlight of Whale Watching Season is The Eden Whale Festival, which is held on the last weekend of October.

Here are the top 10 spots to watch migrating whales according to Destination NSW.

  1. Cape Byron Conservation Area – Imeson, Mildenhall and Thomson Cottages are nestled between the bush and the beach at The Pass.
  2. Camden Haven area south of Port Macquarie – walk through Kattang Nature Reserve to Perpendicular Point to spot the passing whales.
  3. Central Coast is buzzing with a multitude of whale watching vantage points.
  4. Whale Watching Trail features 71 of the best places to spot a whale between Avoca Beach and Tweed Heads.
  5. Nobbys Lighthouse in Newcastle is a popular place to spot whales with 360 degree views of the city’
  6. Jervis Bay boasts a huge array of land and sea based whale watching options.
  7. Bingi Dreaming Track, a 14 km coastal trail that traces the ancient Song Lines of the Yuin Aboriginal people and runs from Congo to Tuross.
  8. Head Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage on Montague Island, just off the coast of Narooma.
  9. Eden on the Sapphire Coast, where whales regularly stop in the calm waters of Two Fold Bay to feed.
  10. Blue Sky Helicopters of Sydney offers a 60 minute flight over Botany Bay and Cape Banks.
