Gold Coast Towns Get Set to Recycle the Fabulous Fifties!

The streets of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads along Australia’s Southern Gold Coast will recycle the 1950s for 11 days from 3 to 13 June 2016! Think ponytails, hula hoops, low riders, rock-n-roll, and Grease Lightnin!

Coolangatta, Queensland, and Tweed Heads, New South Wales, are twin cities along Australia’s Southern Gold Coast.

Every June, the neighboring towns stage Cooly Rocks on, a celebration of the 1950s and 60s.

The two-week long festival offers free entertainment at four stages, two screens, and one marquee. Rock bands play music from the era.

More than 1,300 hot rods, custom cars, and vintage vehicles will park along the road in 10 precincts. They will go cruising through the streets this year on Saturday 4 June and Sunday 5 June.

The Village Market will features more than 140 restro market stalls and 100 craft market stalls.

Events will include a poodle parade, a pop-up dance competition, a rock ‘n’ roll church service, and a swap meet.

A Dj Stringer Car and Memorabilia Auction and a Miss Rockabilly Contest will be held for the first time in 2016.

The festival usually draws about 100,000 nostalgia buffs to the two cities.

Location and Transport

Coolangatta is a 30 minute drive from Surfers Paradise, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Brisbane, and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Brisbane Airport.

Gold Coast Airport is located 2 minutes from downtown Coolangatta.

The airport is served by AirAsia, Air New Zealand, Hongkong Airlines, Jetstar, Jetgo Australia, Qantas, Scoot, Tigerair, and Virgin Australia.

There are non-stop flights to several domestic travel destinations and the following foreign travel destinations: Britain, China, Fiji, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.
