The Oakland Raiders defeated the Arizona Cardinals in the first game of the 2016 pre-season by a score of 31-10. It was the Raiders’ first victory against the Cardinals in the preseason since 11 August 2007.
Michael Smallwood is the Official Accidental Travel Writer Correspondent for Arizona. He is also Founder and President of the Phoenician Raiders Fan Club.
He was one of an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Oakland Raider fans scattered about University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Myke was seated in the second row behind the Raiders bench, where fans dressed in Silver and Black outnumbered fans dressed in Red and Black.
“It was a GREAT EXPERIENCE,” says Myke, when asked what it was like rooting for the Raiders in a "hostile" environment . “But it’s only great when you’re winning.”
Not only did the Raiders win in convincing style, Raiders fans also got some great exposure on national television.
“Did you see the TV exposure we got???” Myke asks.
“My phone went crazy when they saw me on TV.”
The View from San Diego
Tiffany Baxter, Official San Diego Correspondent for the Accidental Travel Writer, was one of a handful of Raiders fans that gathered at the Denny’s in Chula Vista, California, to watch the game.
They didn’t go to their usual hangout because it wasn’t airing the game.
By half time, the crowd had grown to about 60 die-hard Raiders fans.
“It's was amazing to see everyone watching together cheering on the Raiders,” Tiffany says. “We live in San Diego, and it never surprises me howmany Raiders fans are in the 619!”
The View from Los Angeles
Chris Stashik, Official Accidental Travel Writer Correspondent for Greater Los Angeles and the Central Valley, watched the game at home in her family room.
She wanted to be at the game, but she couldn’t make it because she had just returned from The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Canton, Ohio, and there simply wasn't any way she could make it.
“I was really excited,” Chris says. “I love what Atkinson looked like, having two TD's and Jano kicking that 53 yard Field Goal. He might be the old man of the group, but he still has it in him.”
So what is Chris’s prognosis for the regular season?
“We have work to do, but I think by September, we will be ready,” she says. “The game didn't count, but that ‘W’ is still nice. I think we will win the division. The Broncos are history!”
The View from New York
Johnny Lauro, Official Accidental Travel Writer Correspondent for New York City, got to Dillon's – hangout of Oakland Raiders fans in the Big Apple – during the game's second half.
While Dillon's doesn't take the pre-season very seriously, a few fans showed up nonetheless to watch the game.
"There were a few people there having what I like to call a 'dress rehearsal'," Johnny says. "We are just looking forward to doing it for real in a few weeks."
The last time the Oakland Raiders defeated the Arizona Cardinals was in 2007, when the Silver and Black won 27-23 at Oaktown’s notorious Black Hole
