Parisian Opens at Sands Resorts Cotai Strip in Macau

The opening of the Parisian Macao on Macau’s Cotai Strip marks an important milestone in the evolution of the former Portuguese enclave’s tourism industry.

The 3,000-room hotel is the seventh property in Sands Resorts Cotai Strip Macao, an integrated resort situated on reclaimed land, which was launched more the 10 years ago, when The Venetian Macao opened.

If the Venetian had an Italian theme, the Parisian Macao is distinctly French, with Gallic elements running throughout the property.

There is a half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower in front of the hotel with observation decks at the seventh and 37th levels.

Shoppes at Parisian, the hotel’s 300,000-square-foot retail mall, was designed to resemble the streets of Paris. Street entertainers add a quintessentially Parisian flair to the ambience.

If you are expecting a fine dining French restaurant serving haute cuisine, however, you will be in for a surprise! There is not even a Parisian style sidewalk cafe!

Of the hotel’s eight eateries, five serve Chinese food and two serve Japanese food. Only Le Buffet, the hotel’s buffet restaurant, features an eclectic selection of European dishes.

Gambling Monopoly

Prior to Macau’s return to Chinese administration in 1999, there was a gambling monopoly.

Only one player, STDM, owned and operated all of the enclave’s gambling casinos as well as such related industries as horse-racing and dog-racing.

Shortly after the handover, a decision was made to allow three gaming interests to own and operate casinos in Macau.

One of the concessions went SJM Holdings, an outgrowth of STDM. Galaxy Entertainment and Las Vegas Sands were added to the mix.

Three additional operators followed: Melcro Crown, Wynn Macau, and MGM China.

Reclamation work was launched between the islands of Coloane and Taipa to allow for the construction of hotels, casinos, and other leisure and recreational facilities as well as facilities for conventions and exhibitions.

Cotai Strip

Launched more than 10 years ago, Sands Resorts Cotai Strip now comprises several casinos, 850 retail outlets, facilities for conferences and exhibitions, more than 150 restaurants, bars, and lounges, Cotai Arena, and seven hotels with nearly 13,000 hotel rooms and suites:

Conrad Macao Cotai Central – five stars, 600 rooms, four swimming pools, a spa, and three food and beverage outlets.
Four Seasons Hotel Macao Cotai Strip – five stars, 360 rooms and suites, five swimming pools, a spa, and five food and beverage outlets.
Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central – four stars, 1,200 rooms and suites, swimming pool, and two food and beverage outlets. CHECK ROOM RATES!
Parisian Macao – five stars, 3,000 rooms and suites, swimming pool and aqua park, a spa, nine restaurants, and one food court.
St.Regis Macao Cotai Central – five stars, 400 rooms and suites, three swimming pools, a spa, and two food and beverage outlets.
Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel Cotai Central – five stars, 4,000 rooms and suites, three swimming pools, a spa, and four food and beverage outlets.
The Venetian Macao – five stars, 3,000 suites, four swimming pools, a spa, signature restaurants, two lounges, and a food court.

The Parisian Macao was not the only new hotel to open in Cotai this year.

The Wynn Palace Cotai opened in August 2016. A five star hotel, the luxurious property has 1,700 rooms and suites, a swimming pool, a spa, and 18 food and beverage outlets.

If the hotel has a unique selling proposition it is the performance lake and the sky cabs, or air-conditioned cable cars that transport guests overhead.

Coming Attractions

If Sands Macao Cotai Strip is now complete, four hotels developed by other casino operators will open before the end of 2017:

The 13 – an exclusive 200-suite property targeted at high rollers.
MGM Cotai – a five star hotel with 1,600-rooms and suites.
Fifth Hotel Tower – a five star hotel with 780 rooms and suites.
Lisboa Palace – a five star hotel with 2,000 rooms and suites.

How to Get There

Macau has an international airport. Several airlines link the city with travel destinations in China, Taiwan, and nearby countries such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Hong Kong is roughly a one hour’s voyage from Hong Kong. There is frequent service 24 hours a day from Shum Tak Centre in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island.

There are additional voyages from the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, Hong Kong International Airport, and the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal in the Northwestern New Territories.
