The Mid-autumn Festival is over and Chinese National Day is just around the corner. Now is the time Chinese travelers start thinking about where to spend Golden Week.

The Dong Fang Hotel in the Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou is one of the oldest five-star hotels in China, and it still holds a special place in the hearts of seasoned travelers, both foreign and domestic.

I have stayed at the venerable hostelry three times over the years, and it has undergone renovations to ensure that rooms and public spaces are kept up to date.

The semi-annual Canton Trade Fairs used to be held across the street from the hotel, but they moved  to another part of town years ago.

Still, the Yuexiu district, where the hotel is located, remains one of Guangzhou’s most interesting neighborhoods.

The Dong Fang Hotel tops  the HotelsCombined’s top 10 list of favourite hotels to stay at in fall among Chinese travelers.

Four other Chinese hotels made the top 10 list as well as three hotels in Japan and one each in Italy and the United States.
