Case Study – Accidental Travel Writer

In 2012, I started a Top 10 series on sports bars. The first one, entitled Top 10 Oakland Raiders Sports Bars, was the most successful, proving to be one of my most popular posts ever. Six years later, it continues to get traffic.

The  following year, I ran a series of elimination contests, starting with 25 sports bars that had been identified as being friendly to football fans of specific football teams. Again, the most successful contest was the one targeted at Raiders fans.

Each week, the bars getting the fewest votes were eliminated. Things really started to heat up when we got down to just 10 bars, with the top three finalists – one in New York City, one in Washington, DC, and one in Phoenix, Arizona – getting thousands of votes.

This is what the President of the fan club based at the winning sports bar has to say:

“The Accidental Travel Writer has given our Oakland Raiders Booster Club significant attention since we were established in 2012.

“One fan actually came to join our club because we were ranked ninth best place to watch Raiders Football in the United States by the website – before we were even aware of the situation!

“It fueled our members and supporters to campaign for the highest number of votes possible in ‘The Best Raider Sports Bar in the Nation’ contest, which the Accidental Travel Writer launched the following season.

“That time we got notice that we were one of the 25 sports bars nationwide who qualified PRIOR to the contest.

“After we won the contest, with more than 12,000 votes, the Oakland Raiders organization congratulated us for winning the contest. The exposure directly and indirectly led to me to getting invites to very special Raider related events in the following years.

“We are forever grateful for all that the Accidental Travel Writer has done for us!!!”
