Titans/Oilers Team History

The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. And they compete in the South division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL).

Actually, the Titans were not always known as the TItans. And they didn’t begin play in Tennessee .

In fact, they began play in 1960 in Houston, Texas. Furthermore, they were a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). Orginally, they called themselves the Houston Oilers.

Interestingly, the team won the first two AFL Championships. After that, the team joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

When the football team relocated from Houston to Tennessee in 1997, it played its first season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis. And it continued to call itself the Oilers.

After one year, the team moved to Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville. And it changed its name from the Tennessee Oilers to the Tennessee Titans.

Meanwhile, Houston got an expansion NFL franchise in 2002. And the Houston Texans play in AFC South.

Why the Team Changed Its Name

Many sports franchises keep the same name when they move from one city to another.

For example the Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics when the baseball team moved to Missouri. In the same vein, they changed their name to the Oakland Athletics when they moved to California.

Likewise, the Brooklyn Dodgers became the Los Angeles Dodgers when they moved to the West Coast. Similarly, the New York Giants became the San Francisco Giants when they moved to the City by the Bay.

So why did the Oilers change their name to the Titans?

First of all, the team was known as the “Houston Oilers”. Because oil was more associated with Texas than Tennessee, the team changed its name to “Titans” after moving to Tennessee.

Currently, the team plays at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Originally, the stadium was called Adelphia Coliseum. And it opened in 1989.

Interestingly, the Titans continue to have a fan base in Texas. For example, a fan club in Austin, the state capital, is particularly active.
