Taste of Hong Kong is a festival of food located on the Central Harbourfront in the shadows of the Hong Kong Observation Wheel with a chance to preview more than 60 dishes – most of which are new for 2018 – from 20 of the best restaurants in Hong Kong.

Now in its third year, Taste of Hong Kong gives Hong Kong foodies the chance to sample dishes from some of Hong Kong’s top tables in a festive atmosphere on the waterfront of Victoria Harbour.
In the shadows of the Hong Kong Observation Wheel with the towering high rises of Central as a backdrop, foodies can snack and feast on everything from classic dishes to new Hong Kong menu entrees.
There are also cooking demonstrations, wine workshops, a Gourmet Market, wine bars, cocktail bars, exhibitors, and other attractions.
When you get tired of snacking and feasting, you can stretch out on lounge chairs and pillows and listen to music by some of Hong Kong’s hottest live bands with music curated by some of Hong Kong’s most talented DJs.
Best of all, the weather is cooperating, with comfortable temps in the low 20s in the afternoon.
It is cooling off a bit at twilight, however, so if you decide to attend an evening session, you might want to bring a sweater or a jacket.
I was invited to attend a preview called Chef’s Table by Marriott organized by Marriott International.
Top restaurants from the hotel group’s four flagship hotels in Hong Kong served sample dishes followed by a three course tasting menu.
We could choose between a Chinese menu from Tin Lung Heen at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, or a Western menu from the Kitchen at W Hong Kong.
It was a tough choice, but I opted for the Western menu.
First we were served grab-and-go dishes by restaurants at all four Marriott hotels in the territory: Renaissance Hong Kong, W Hong Kong, Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers, and The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong.
Then we were served a mouth-watering three course lunch, which was washed down with a bottom-less glass of Domaine Plou and Fils.
After the food tasting was over, it was time to mingle with old friends, chat with new friends, and take the requisite selfies.
One of the highlights was getting to meet the Culinary Director of Marriott International in Hong Kong, Robert Nilsson, who is from Sweden.
I spent four wonderful weeks in Sweden three summers ago so we had lots to talk about!
Following the tasting at Chef’s Table by Marriott, it was time to explore the rest of the venue.
It was a bit lonely because this was a preview for journalists. The venue was scheduled to be opened to the public at 6 pm.
I stopped at the Golden Duck kiosk, where in exchange for taking a selfie and posting it on Instagram, I was rewarded with two bags of Singaopore’s favourite snack’s, which are flavoured with salted egg yokes.
Believe me, it tastes better than it sounds!
Tasting sessions are divided into lunch and dinner services, each one lasting four or five hours.

- Friday 23rd March 2018: 12.30 pm – 4.30 pm and 6 pm – 10 pm
- Saturday 24 March 2018: 12.30 pm – 4.30 pm and 6 pm – 10 pm
- Sunday 25 March 2018: 12.30 pm- 5.30 pm
Standard entry is HK$150 at the door.
Taste of Hong Kong is a fun concept., and I enjoyed the Chef’s Table tasting menu by Marriott International.
The grab-and-go dishes were yummy, and my favourite was the double-boiled chicken soup with bamboo fungus in baby coconut from Tin Lung Heen at The Rtiz-Carlton Hong Kong.
The three-course menu by Robert Nilsson was taste sensation! What a fascinating progression of tastes and textures.
The starter was delightfully creamy with bursts of flavour thanks to the yummy Swedish caviar that was married with yoghurt.
The roasted lamb served for the main course was accented by the crispiness of the cabbage and some salty sweet lemon paste, which was mouthwateringly delicious. I absolutely loved it!
The dessert was an all-new taste sensation, which was both sweet and surprisingly tart. I only wish I could have washed it down with a double espresso!
The timing was perfect. There are never any guarantees when it comes to weather in Hong Kong, but the weather cooperated magnificently.
The only letdown of the afternoon was courtesy of my Samsung Galaxy 8Note, which continues to let me down. Would that I had never wasted nearly HK$7,000 on the thing.
More than 60% of the pix I took were totally useless, and of the pix that I did use, I had to waste far too much time “playing” with them to make them acceptable for use in this post.
