A Passenger’s Guide to Hat Yai International Airport (Thailand)

Hat Yai International Airport is a major airport in Thailand’s far south.  The airport is served by several domestic and foreign airlines, with flights to many travel destinations in Thailand and such neighboring countries as China, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Hat Yai International Airport (TDY) is major airport serving the city of Hat Yai in the Southern Thai province of Songkhla. It is the largest city in Thailand’s extreme south.

With a population of nearly 360,000 people, Hat Yai is the largest city in the province, but it is not the provincial capital. Songkhla is the capital of the province.

Songkhla borders Malaysia, and Hat Yai is a relatively short distance from the border.

Airport Overview

Hat Yai International Airport  handles more than 4,650,000 airline passengers a year. It is the fifth busiest commercial airport in Thailand.

With a large Muslim minority living in the region, the airport is important for Muslims making pilgrimages to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. An estimated 1.5 million pilgrims make the trip to Mecca each year.

Airlines and Flight Information

Hai Yat International Airport is served by nine airlines, including five domestic airlines and four foreign airlines. The airport is a hub for Thai AirAsia.

There are flights several airports across Thailand, but the most important link is between Hat Yai International Airport and Bangkok’s two airports: Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang International Airport.

There is a total of 30 daily flights on the route, including 25 to and from Don Mueang and five to and from Suvarnabhumi.

  • Nok Air flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport.
  • Bangkok Airways flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Phuket International Airport.
  • Thai AirAsia flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Chiang Rai International Airport, Khon Kaen Airport, and U-Tapao International Airport near Pattaya in Thailand and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Thai Lion Air flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport and Udon Thani International Airport.

The following foreign air carriers serve the airport …

  • Jetstar Asia Airways flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Singapore.
  • Kunming Airlines flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Kunming, China.
  • Malindo Air flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia.
  • Scoot flies from Hat Yai International Airport to Singapore.

Money exchange counters and ATMs are located inside the airport terminal, but keep in mind that exchange rates are usually better in town than at the airport.

The airport has several food and beverage outlets as well as boutiques.

Taxis, limousines, buses, and car rentals are among the transportation options at Hat Yai International Airport.

Airport Location

Hat Yai International Airport is located in the Khlong Hoi Khong District of Songkhla province. It is 9 kilometres from the city,.

Hat Yai is approximately 55 kilometres from the Padang Besar border crossing to Malaysia. The trip by minivan takes about 50 minutes.

Hat Yai is located 748 kilometres (465 miles) south of Bangkok. The flight time from Bangkok to Hat Yai is one hour and 20 minutes.
