Hotel Review: Quality Inn & Suites Near San Francisco International Airport

Quality Inn & Suites South San Francisco is a two-mile drive from San Francisco International Airport. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, a hot breakfast, and a 24-hour shuttle service to and from the airport.

Faced with a late evening arrival at San Francisco International Airport, I decide that I would rather spend the night at a hotel near the airport rather than a hotel in town.

After exploring several options on line, I settle on Quality Inn & Suites, which is about two miles from the airport.

My decision was based on the following criteria: price, distance from the airport, guest reviews, and the fact that it offers a 24-hour shuttle service.

Many of the other hotels I considered only offered shuttle services until 12 midnight.

While there should have been adequate time to make it in time, I wanted to play it safe – just in case my flight was delayed.

The fact that breakfast was included was a bonus. I don’t generally eat breakfast in the morning, and based on the previous motel experiences I’ve had in the United States, I wasn’t expecting much.

The Arrival …

After clearing customs and picking up my bags at baggage claim, I decide to try calling the hotel.

I am told to take a taxi or Uber to the motel. I will be reimbursed in cash.

I was expecting to have to wait for a shuttle bus. I have often had to wait a considerable length of time for shuttle buses to  arrive at airports so this is a very pleasant surprise.

The Lobby …

The lobby is cheerful and the front desk clerk is very friendly. He reimburses my taxi fare and reminds me that breakfast is included.

“It’s actually quite a nice breakfast,” he adds.

My Room …

I stay in room 101 on the ground floor. It is located at the front of the motel.

The room is furnished in earth tones, with a chocolate brown and beige colour scheme and a burnt orange sofa.

The room is more specious than I was expecting, with a queen size bed, a sofa and coffee table, and a desk and chair.

There is  an open front closet, and counter to put my suitcase on, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, and a decent sized refrigerator.

The room is spotlessly clean!

The Bathroom …

The bathroom has white fixtures, a marble countertop, and a bathtub with a shower curtain.

Breakfast is served in a breakfast room off the hotel lobby, and it exceeds my expectations.

It is not on par with most of the five-star hotels I have stayed at, but if truth be told, I’m not a big fan of the over-the-top breakfast buffets served at many five star hotels.

The breakfast at this motel is definitely better than any of the other motels I have stayed at. I am pleasantly surprised!

There are cereals, pastries (which I am very tempted to try, but I resist temptation) muffins (which I do try), yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit juice, and coffee and tea.

There are scrambled eggs and breakfast meats, country sausages the first day and regular sausages the second day.

I am surprised that omelettes are cooked to order. And I enjoy making my own waffles with the self-service waffle machine.

Even at the poshest five-star resorts I’ve stayed at, waffles tend to be made in advance, and they simply don’t taste as good as ones eaten as soon as they are made.

So the waffles are top of the line!

The Facilities …

In addition to the breakfast room, the motel has vending machines for snacks and drinks and an automatic teller machine.

There is an ice machine in the breakfast area, and it can be accessed 24 hours.

There is an exercise room, which I didn’t know about, and a meeting room that can accommodate up to 20 people.

The Neighborhood …

The motel is located in an high-end industrial area, with several other hotels and motels nearby.

There is a McDonald’s within a two-minute walking distance of the motel, and a mini-mart a bit further up the road. Unfortunately, the mini-mart doesn’t sell alcoholic beverages.

I learn later, however, that there are restaurants in the neighborhood that make deliveries, and that includes alcoholic beverages.

There is also a large CostCo across the street from the motel.

What I Loved …

The hotel was spotlessly clean, my room was spacious and comfortable, the breakfast was yummy, and the front desk staff were very friendly.

What I Hated …

There really wasn’t anything not to like. My only disappointment was the distance to the nearest BART station. If I had a car, I wouldn’t have any complaints.

The Verdict …

Considering the reasonable price, I thought this motel offered excellent value.

The only thing that would stop me from staying there again was the distance to the nearest BART station and the lack of a nearby mini mart.

Now that I’ve arranged a domestic sim card and signed up for Uber, however, these issues wouldn’t be much of a problem.
