San Francisco Hotel Review: Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square

Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square, is a luxurious, all-suite boutique hotel occupying roughly half of a former chocolate factory, which was built of red brick. Located near the waterfront, the hotel offers a spectacular view of San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island.

70 Days Across America

Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square, is a sophisticated boutique hotel targeted at leisure travelers and long-staying guests.

Located near historic Fisherman’s Wharf, the hotel offers fully furnished one, two, and three bedroom apartments with living rooms, formal dining areas, fully equipped kitchens, and washers and driers.

The hotel’s red-brick exterior has been beautifully restored to its original elegance, but the interior is 100% contemporary.

The exposed red brick walls of the interior spaces are particularly striking.

Fairmont Heritage Place is located a short distance from the San Remo Hotel, another heritage hotel, where I spent my first three nights in the City by a Bay, but the similarities end there.

The hotel is located within Ghirardelli Square, a former chocolate factory that was converted into a dining, shopping, and entertainment venue several decades ago.

A significant portion of the former factory was converted into Fairmont Heritage Place a short while back.

Still, a large number of restaurants, cafes, bars, boutiques, and other attractions remain within the complex.

As a result, the hotel itself doesn’t have (or need) any food and beverage outlets of its own. Anything you might want is just a few steps away.

Upon my arrival at the hotel, I was greeted by the friendly and professional staff. I was checked in at the front desk and escorted to my room.

The trip from the front desk to my room was an adventure in itself. I was taken down indoor corridors and  along outdoor passageways.

The views of Ghirardelli Square and San Francisco Bay along the way were spectacular.

There was even an outdoor fireplace just outside my private terrace.

My Room …

I was housed in room 220, which had direct access to the outdoors.

There was a bottle of California wine, a box of Ghirardelli Chocolate, and a birthday card waiting for me on a counter.

My room had an open-style kitchen, dining room, and living room.

The kitchen was fully equipped. It had both a coffee maker and an espresso machine as well as a washer and drier.

The dining room was set up for six people, but I think another four could easily be accommodated.

The living room had sofas, coffee table, a stereo, and a gas-burning fire-place.

The Bedrooms …

The apartment had two bedrooms. Both of the bedrooms were spacious and smartly furnished, with king size beds and on-suite bathrooms.

Both of the two bedrooms had en-suite bathrooms.

The bathrooms were tastefully furnished in what appeared to be Italian marble.

The master bathroom had a wet room with both a walk-in shower and a bathtub.

The toiletries in the bathrooms were by Rose 31.

The Happy Hour …

There was a nightly happy hour with wines, cocktails, and simple snacks in the lounge.

A light breakfast was served in the same location in the morning.

The Sunsets…

The hotel’s privileged location afforded spectacular views of San Francisco Bay.

The view of Alcatraz Island was particularly impressive. One of the highlights of my stay was the beautiful sunset at dusk.

The Location …

The hotel is situated in one of one the best locations in San Francisco for leisure travelers.

Located within Ghirardelli Square, it is just steps from several upscale eateries and cafes. The hotel is also just one block from the waterfront and near a cable car terminus.

Fisherman’s Wharf, Crissey Field, and other key tourist attractions are all within walking distance of the hotel.

North Beach and Little Italy are also  both a hop, skip, and the jump away. A free shuttle service is available if you would prefer to walk.

The Farewell …

A  member of staff helps me with my luggage and drives me to my next destination.

All good things must end, and so did my all-too-brief stay at the Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square.

The hotel offered a complimentary shuttle service within a given radius, which I took advantage of to travel to the Ferry Building, where I caught a ferry to the next stop on my 70 day journey across America.

The Verdict

From the beautifully restored red brick exterior, to the modern interior design of the apartments, with those lovely exposed brick walls – I totally loved this hotel.

The spaces were spacious, the facilities were excellent, the staff was both friendly and professional, and the location could not be beat.

I’ll give this hotel two thumbs up.
