Amazing Thailand

Nyonya Spa is a day spa at Proud Phuket, a lovely four-star hotel in the Nai Yang section of Phuket in Southern Thailand.

Nyongya Spa offers a full menu of spa treatments and therapies, which are designed to restore balance, encourage healing, and promote relaxation.

Drawing on Asian skills, local ingredients, and Western quality standards, the treatments and therapies cater to the four personality types: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

The Spa Treatments …

The treatments are based on the belief that there are four basic personality types, each one based on one of the four elements: fire, air, water, and earth.

There are four treatments for each of the four personality personality types …

Fire – January through March, promoting communication and physical strength, fire is designed to promote the law of attraction, drawing on frankincense, rose geranium, and tangerine.

  • Treatments include Soul of Fire Massages, Honey Sesame Scrubs, Honey Milk Wraps, and Aromatic Milk Baths.

Air – April through June, promoting communication, travel, intellect, divination, freedom and wisdom, air uses the essential oils of lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint to increase your abilities.

  • Treatments include Andaman Sea Breeze Massages, Coconut Creamy Scrubs, Pineapple and Papaya Cream Wraps, and Herbal and Spice Baths.

Water – July through September, promoting love, healing, peace, compassion, reconciliation, forgiveness, de-stressing, deep dreams, psychic abilities, and purification, water uses the essential oils of chamomile, lemon, and spearmint.

  • Treatments include oceanic massages, marine salt glow scrubs, marine algae wraps, and ocean baths.

Reflecting Phuket’s distinctive Sino-Thai heritage, Nyonya Spa has a burnt yellow and Mandarin orange colour scheme, with turquoise and dark chocolate accents. There are rustic, whimsical, and cheerful touches.

The spa carries out the same interior design theme evident throughout Proud Phuket, taking it to its highest level.

The spa has  a common area where four people can have a massage at the same time on traditional Thai-style floor mats.

There are also private treatment rooms with elevated treatment platforms for one or two people.

There is even a room with a traditional wooden bathtub for signature baths.

The Verdict …

I’ve had countless massages over the years, at everything from nondescript storefront massage parlours to sumptuous full-service spas at five star resorts.

The facilities have gone from functional to sybaritic.

I must say, the decor of Nyonya Spa was in a class of its own. It made me think, Zhang Yimou meets Shanghai Tang.

As for the actual treatment, it is hard to get a bad massage in Thailand, and this one certainly did not disappoint.

The Location …

Proud Phuket is a short five to 10 minute drive from Phuket International Airport. If you’ve got some time to waste after checking out of your hotel and before catching your flight, this would be a very good spot to spend it.

If you’ve got any time left after your treatment, the hotel has a lovely cafe called Ang Ku Tea House, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, or dinner in equally charming surroundings.
