Food + Beverage

Fairwood is a mass market restaurant chain serving a varied and rotating menu running from Cantonese style roasted meats to Chinese food, Indian curries, Japanese ramens, and Hong Kong-style Western dishes.

The first Fairwood outlet opened in Tsuen Wan in the New Territories in 1972, and the rest is history.

The chain was rebranded in 2003, going upmarket with a new logo, new decor, and an improved menu.

There are now more nearly 150 outlets in Hong Kong and neighboring Guangdong province.

Fairwood is Hong Kong’s second largest fast-food chain, serving more than 100,000 customers per day.

The Food …

With a recipe calling for more than 30 spices, curry is one of the chain’s most popular dishes.

You never know what kind of curry is going to be on the menu: Ah Wood Curry Beef Brisket with Rice, Ah Wood Curry Chicken with Rice, or Ah Wood Curry with Assorted Vegetables and Egg with Rice.

Other popular dishes include Baked Pork Chop, Sweet Corn and Diced Pork, and Thick-Cut Black Pork Cutlet. Fairwood’s Japanese style ramens are also popular.

Targeting health-conscious diners, Fairwood also serves a “No MSG” series.

The chain was also the first fast-food chain in Hong Kong to introduce a “no smoking” policy across its network.

The no smoking policy was launched several years before the government implemented its ban on smoking in public.

My Recommended Dish …

When I dine at Fairwood, I almost always order one of three dishes.

Pineapple Sweet and Sour Pork is my absolute favourite Fairwood dish, and it rarely disappoints.

Cooked to order, it is almostĀ  as good as the sweet and pork I’ve had at fine-dining restaurants.

The main differences are the affordable price and the no-nonsense presentation.

I also love the char siu, a.k.a. barbecue pork, which is served over rice. Another favourite is the Spaghetti Bolognaise.

Fairwood used to serve an excellent Russian borscht. For reasons that I don’t understand, it seems to have been dropped from the menu.

The Ambiance …

The ambiance of Fairwood dining rooms is similar to that of most fast food restaurants in Hong Kong. Tables seat two or four diners. Seats are fixed in place.

Fairwood has 29 restaurants on Hong Kong Island, 38 restaurants in Kowloon, and 70 restaurants in the New Territories.

The chain also has seven restaurants in Guangzhou and three outlets in Shenzhen.
