70 Days Across America

The Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa is a four-star resort. It is located in the heart of Napa Valley. There is a restaurant, swimming pool, spa, and fitness room. Best of all, bicycles are available to explore the Napa Valley Vine Trail, which passes the hotel,

Why I’m Going …

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I’ve been living in Hong Kong for more than 25 years.

To celebrate a milestone birthday, I decided to fly back to the United States and make a 70-day trip across the country. I was calling my epic journey 70 Days Across America.

My first stop was Northern California. And Napa Valley was the the fourth stop on the Northern California leg of the trip..

I had already been to South San Francisco, Los Altos, and San Francisco. Because I didn’t have a driver’s license, I had to rely on public transportation to get from San Francisco to Napa Valley.

Getting There …

My trip from San Francisco to Napa Valley was leisurely, to say the least!

After checking out of my hotel, I went to the San Francisco Ferry Building by Uber. Then I took the San Francisco Ferry to Vallejo, which is roughly half the distance from San Francisco to Napa Valley.

From Vallejo, I went the rest of the way by bus. In fact, it was quite an adventure. Read about it here …

My hotel was directly opposite the bus terminus. I walked across the street and checked in. The staff at the front desk were unusually friendly and professional.

My Room …

I stayed for two nights in room 1013. It was a standard room with a king size bed.

The room had a restful earth tones colour scheme. For example, there were soft beige walls and fabrics. And there were dark brown wall panels and wooden furniture.

My room had a standard hotel bathroom. It had a lighted mirror and a combination bathtub/shower.

As a travel blogger, I spend a lot of time in my hotel room when I travel. Therefore, a comfortable work station is important to me.

Fortunately, this room had a very comfortable set-up. Firstly, there was an electrical outlet within reach. No need to get down on my hands and knees.

Secondly, there was plenty of room to spread out my reference materials. Next, there as a desk lamp. No need to rely exclusively on ambient lighting. In addition, there was a very comfortable chair.

Most importantly, Wi-Fi was complimentary.

The Wine Tastings …

Every evening, a different vintner served a selection of wines to hotel guests in the lobby. Needless to say, they were very knowledgeable about the wines they were serving.

I enjoyed discussing the wines I sampled with them and learning what made them special.

The Restaurant …

The hotel had an informal eatery in the lobby. It served American dishes made with local and seasonal ingredients.

There was both indoor and outdoor seating. It was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Gardens …

The enjoyed wandering around the hotel’s beautiful gardens.

The Facilities …

The hotel had an outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool. It was open from 7 am until 10 pm.

Other facilities included a fitness center. It had cardiovascular equipment and free weights.

Finally, there was a full service spa. It offered a full menu of spa treatments. And there were indoor and outdoor seating areas.

The Neighborhood …

The hotel sits in the heart of the Napa County wine country. In fact, the Napa Valley Vine Trail passes across the street from the hotel.

Because I am an avid bicyclist, I decided to borrow one of the hotel’s bicycles and take a spin.

The views were so spectacular that I was gone much longer than I had expected. In fact, I cycled all the way to Youunville and back, a 10 mile trip!

‘The Napa Valley Wine Trail is network of walking and bicycling trails running  from Vallejo to Calistoga. The well-paved trails afford excellent views of vineyards and the surrounding hills.

‘There are rest stops, drinking fountains, and signage with information,’

The Verdict …

I loved the hotel. The staff were especially warm and friendly. And the location was superb.

I especially enjoyed taking a spin on the Napa Valley Vine Trail.

My only beef was with the extra charges. In addition to the standard California Sales Tax were three other charges, which dramatically added to the price of the room.
