Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant San Antonio is a popular Mexican eatery in the South Texas city. Serving authentic “casero style” cooking, it has an extensive menu running from appetizers and soups to nachos, a la carte dishes, and numerous Mexican dinners.

I spent a week in the city of San Antonio. And I stayed with a long lost friend I hadn’t seen in several decades.
During my stay, we ate at several restaurants. And Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant was one of them.
In fact, the Mexican eatery is considered one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in San Antonio.

Why I’m in San Antonio …
So what am I doing in San Antonio?
In fact, San Antonio is a city in Southern Texas. With an estimated population of 1,547,253, it is not only the seventh most populous city in the United States.
In addition, San Antonio is the second most populous city in Texas. To clarify, only Houston has a larger population.
Furthermore, San Antonio is a historic city. And it has a fascinating collection of historic sites. For example, it is home to the Alamo. In addition, there are four Spanish missions.
As the oldest municipality in Texas, San Antonio was founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718. Most importantly, San Antonio was celebrating its 300th anniversary the year of my visit.
Second Leg of My Epic Trip
Coincidentally, San Antonio was first stop on the second leg of my epic trip, 70 Days Across America.
In fact, I had already spent a few weeks in Northern California. While in the Golden State, I visited San Francisco, Los Altos, Napa Valley, Concord, Oakland, Berkeley, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Sacramento.
Originally, I was hoping to make it all the way from California to the East Coast. But as fate would have it, that wasn’t possible.
First, I spent twice as much time in Northern California as I had originally planned. In fact, I was having too much fun connecting with old friends and long lost cousins.
Second, two of my hosts on the East Coast had to back out because of health issues
And as time was running out, I decided to skip the East Coast.
While I was expecting to visit San Antonio on my way back across the country, I decided to make it the furthest point east on my trip.
Then i would head back to California by way of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In fact, a cousin I hadn’t seen in 50 years had settled in Albuquerque. And she said not only could I stay with her.
In addition, she would like to introduce me to her children and grandchildren. Also, she would like to show me around New Mexico!
Finally, I would end my trip in Southern California, as originally planned. And I would return to Hong Kong by way of LAX.
Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant
The ambiance at Los Barrios was both informal and relaxed.
In fact, it had both indoor and outdoor dining areas. And we chose to eat indoors.
There was live Mexican music, which added a lively musical backdrop. And it helped to create a festive atmosphere.
Our Yummy Dinner
Because this was my first visit to Texas, I wanted to try some authentic Tex-Mex.
So I explained to the waiter that I was from California and that I was familiar with what passed for Mexican food in the Golden State.
But I wanted something authentically Tex-Mex. Could he make a recommendation?
This seemed to please the waiter because he broke into a big grin. And he recommended puffy tacos.
I had never heard of puffy tacos before. And there was a choice of beef, chicken, beans, or guacamole as filling.
So I ordered two beef puffy tacos, which came with Spanish rice and beans.
My dining companion ordered chicken enchiladas.
While I was in the mood for margaritas, my dining companion wanted wine. Because there was a special on a specific type of wine, that is what we ordered.
When the waiter returned, he said that they were out of that type of wine. So he upgraded us to a more expensive wine at the same price.
And that was a very pleasant surprise!
The Verdict
The ambiance was great. And the service was both friendly and professional. In addition, I loved the live music!
Regarding the food, it was very good. And the servings were generous.
I’ve had tacos made with crispy tortillas and soft tortillas. But this was the first time trying tacos made with puffy tortillas.
The texture was interesting. And I’m glad I tried them. But crispy tortillas are still my favourites.
