Shanghai’s Sports Culture: From Tai Chi to Touchdowns

Shanghai is a city of striking contrasts — where futuristic skyscrapers tower over ancient temples and street food vendors rub shoulders with chic cafés.
Along the Bund, stately buildings from the 1920s and ’30s recall Shanghai’s storied past, when it was known as the Paris of the East, while joggers and cyclists compete for space along the waterfront promenade.
From dawn tai chi sessions to impromptu ping pong matches, physical activity is part of everyday life in Shanghai. You’ll spot children playing badminton, skipping rope, or kicking shuttlecocks in shady courtyards all across the city, while adults play tennis, shoot hoops, or practice their golf swing at the many driving ranges and golf courses that surround the city.
Professional Sports in Shanghai: Five Leagues, Six Teams

Shanghai fields six professional teams, competing in the following leagues: Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), Chinese Super League (CSL), American Football League of China (AFLC), Shanghai Rugby Football Club (SRFC), and the regional ice hockey leagues.
Blogger’s Note: The Chinese Super League is China’s top-tier professional football (soccer) league, which has four tiers.
-
Shanghai Sharks (CBA) — Established in 1996, they won the CBA championship in 2002. The team plays home games at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium.
-
Shanghai Port FC (CSL) — Founded in 2005, they won the Chinese Super League title in 2018. Their home ground is the Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium.
-
Shanghai Shenhua FC (CSL) — Established in 1993, they’ve won the Chinese FA Cup multiple times, including 2019 and 2023. In addition, they have claimed league titles in 1995 and 1998. They play home games at the Hongkou Football Stadium.
-
Shanghai Titans (AFLC) — Founded in 2010, they compete in the American Football League of China. Home games are typically held at Shanghai Community Sports Grounds, though venues may vary.
-
Shanghai Silver Dragons (SRFC) — Active since the early 2000s, they represent Shanghai in domestic rugby competitions. Matches are hosted at SRFC’s rugby pitch in Pudong.
-
Shanghai Hockey Club (Regional) — Established in 1995, they participate in regional leagues and international friendlies. Games are played at venues like the Feiyang Skating Center.
Where to Watch Sports in Shanghai

While Shanghai is home to six professional sports teams, most sports bars in Shanghai concentrate on international events. To whit, Premier League football, NBA , Six Nations rugby, UFC bouts, and Formula 1 races tend to dominate the screens of Shanghai sports bars. That said, a handful also tune in for Chinese Super League football or CBA basketball when demand spikes.
This guide explores 40 spots that usually screen live or delayed games — not just dedicated sports bars, but anywhere with a reliable feed and fan-friendly vibe. You’ll find screens in hotel lounges, neighborhood pubs, rooftop cocktail bars, Mexican cantinas, British roasters, and American BBQ joints.
Despite time zone differences, many Shanghai bars stream overseas matches live — often in the early hours — while others replay key games later to fit local schedules.
Before you head out, double-check: bars may be booked for private events, closed for renovations, gone out of business, or simply not screening the match you want. Call ahead, message the venue, or scan their socials to avoid letdown.
