Top 10 Mexican Restaurants in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the world’s best cities for foodies, but when it comes to Mexican food, the choices have always been limited.  That is starting to change as Mexican restaurants start to gain in popularity. Here is a short list of city’s most popular Mexican eateries.

Putting together a list of Hong Kong’s top 10 Mexican restaurants just 10 years ago would have been impossible.

Because 10 years ago Hong Kong didn’t even have 10 Mexican restaurants. You could probably have counted the number of Hong Kong Mexican restaurants on the fingers on one hand.

All that started to change a few years ago, with Mexican restaurants starting to sprout like mushrooms after a spring rain.

Some of the Mexican restaurants have been flashes in pan, opening with great fanfare, only to close several months later.

But other Mexican restaurants are proving to be highly successful.

The Cali-Mex chain alone now has 10 taquerias scattered about Hong Kong, with outlets in Aberdeen, Admiralty Causeway Bay, Mongkok, Kennedy Town, Quarry Bay, Sheung Wan, SoHo, and Wanchai.

The largest venue – the Cali-Mex Bar and Grill – opened several months ago in the heart of Hong Kong’s premier food-and-beverage district, Lan Kwai Fong, at 21 D’Aguilar Street.

Purists might balk that what they serve “isn’t really Mexican food,” but the chain’s marketing materials make no bones about it.

They proudly describe their fare as California-style Mexican food, which is both light and fresh.

Cinco de Mayo

Whether they serve California-style Mexican food, Tex-Mex, Southwestern barbecue,  authentic Mexico City-style street fare, or Veracruz-style seafood, many Mexican restaurants across Hong Kong will be offering special promotions to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

What’s interesting is that Cinco de Mayo, which means’ “May Fifth” in Spanish, is much more popular in the United States than in Mexico, where it is celebrated in only one state: Puebla.
