The Back Story
W Bali – Seminyak opened in 2011 as the brand’s first resort in Indonesia, introducing W’s “Luxury Liberated” philosophy to Seminyak, arguably Bali’s trendiest beachfront address.
I spent two nights at the W Bali – Seminyak the following year, when it was still new — and so was my blog. I was blown away by the resort’s cutting‑edge design. I remember doing leisurely laps in the hotel’s serpentine swimming pool followed by light bites and mojitos at Woobar, the resort’s trend-setting social anchor.
The friendly staff were delighted when I asked them to pose for photos. At some point, one of them asked me to hand him my camera so I could be included in the pix (see above).
Over the years, the property has undergone occasional upgrades. If I remember correctly, on my second visit to the resort in 2015, the spot where I had enjoyed breakfast on my first stay had changed. Were there any other changes? I can’t remember. But I’m sure of one thing: Woobar was still there.
And if Woobar ever did change, there was one thing I knew would never change: those spectacular sunsets over Seminyak Beach!
Fast Forward to the Present
Alunê has taken over the space formerly occupied by Woobar, marking the resort’s most significant oceanfront transformation since its opening fifteen years ago.
Alunê is designed as an all‑day oceanfront space shaped by Seminyak’s natural rhythm. You can come for dining and drinks, or you can stay to use the facilities.
The covered bar remains the focal point of Alunê, but it has been totally redesigned. Hand‑cut mosaic tile sits alongside orange‑tinted glass panels that glow in amber and gold as the sun sinks into the sea.
The Design
The counter in the bar is hand‑carved and hand‑painted timber, finished in deep ocean blue and burnt orange, a design feature accented with Rosso Alicante marble, green quartzite, and grey teakwood.
The earthen tones — especially the burnt orange, deep blues, and red marble — give the palette a subtle Southwestern feel, reminiscent of the earthy color combinations I remember seeing on my visit to New Mexico.
Custom barstools echo the same wave‑inspired forms, tying the space back to the tide and the natural rhythm that shaped the concept.
Dining Only or Spend the Day
Guests at Alunê have four options: dining only, signature daybed, beach cabana, or pool cabana.
Daybeds are appropriate for two people. Beach cabanas offer shade and are suitable for small groups. The pool cabana includes a private jacuzzi and is not suitable for families with children. Note: daybeds and cabanas offer swimming pool access, but dining only does not.
The transformation from Woobar to Alunê was led by WELD, a Jakarta‑based design studio that has worked on projects for Potato Head Studios, Klymax Lounge, and a range of boutique F&B, residential, and retail concepts across Indonesia.
Alunê is a fusion of “alunan,” the Indonesian word for the gentle, continuous rhythm of ocean waves, and “lune,” the French word for moon — a name that reflects the venue’s distinct design philosophy.
The Food and Beverage — Alunê
The menu at Alunê was created by Chef Jules Winckler, who has an impressive pedigree: he has worked in the kitchens of several restaurants in Paris and other French cities. Chef Jules joined W Bali as Executive Sous Chef in early 2026.
The exclusively à la carte menu has a Mediterranean focus, running from dips, bites, salads, and finger foods to pastas, pizzas, and some innovative main courses, which are called The Social Table.
Think wagyu picanha, catch‑of‑the‑day sashimi, black local pork chop, baked camembert, charred rib eye, and Papuan prawns. There are also all‑day breakfasts and mouthwatering desserts. The Nutella pizza with hazelnut praline crumbs sounds irresistible!
The stars of the show are undoubtedly the Signature Frozen Bowls, which include:
- Blue Tide — hydration (blue spirulina, coconut milk, coconut yogurt, lime)
- Golden Hour — strength (whey protein, mango, pineapple, ginger, turmeric)
- Green Garden — focus (matcha, spinach, avocado, mint)
- Purple Power — energy (açaí, dragon fruit, banana, honey)
- Ruby Bloom — glow (collagen, strawberry, beetroot, raspberry)
The menu includes vegan, vegetarian, and gluten‑free options, which are thoughtfully marked with emojis.
The drinks list runs from Premium Signature Cocktails, Signature Cocktails, and Luxe Cocktails to mocktails, wellness teas, and Signature Smoothies. There are also several sharing cocktails, which are served in jugs.

Final Thoughts
It’s been 15 years since I made that first visit to W Bali — Seminyak and 11 years since my second visit.
But I’ve never forgotten doing those leisurely laps in that serpentine swimming pool, sipping mojotos at the bar, or lounging by the pool.
In the intervening years, I’ve stayed at dozens of hotels, but only a small handful made a deep impression on me. W Bali — Seminyak is one of them.
