North Dakota State University – Sports Overview

North Dakota State University (NDSU) is located in the city of Fargo, which is the most populous city in North Dakota. Its population was nearly 126,000 in 2020.
NDSU was founded in 1890, but it was originally called the North Dakota Agricultural Collage. It fielded its first football team in 1894, and it was initially called the Farmers.
Later, the team was renamed the Aggies. It was renamed renamed the Bison in 1922.
NDSU currently competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the NCAA Division I Football.
The Bison play home football games at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. Relatively small, the stadium holds just 19,000 fans.
Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team plays home games at Scheels Center. Built in 1970, it seats 5,460 fans.
Both the Fargodome and Scheels Center are multi-use facilities. They often host concerts and other events.
Why Is NDSU’s Sports Teams Called the Bison?

Neither the coach nor the football liked being called the Aggies. Since they wanted a fierce and strong mascot, the bison was the obvious choice since bison used to roam the North Dakota prairie.
The team was renamed the Bison in 1922, and it is often referred to as the “Thundering Herd“. The team colors and green and yellow.
