New Travel Destinations

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Australia rose by 32.6% in April 2016 compared to the same month the year before. The sharp spike in tourism is prompting Chinese airlines to add new routes between China and Australia.

Capital Airlines will launch a flight from Shenyang, Liaoning, to Melbourne, Victoria, by way of Qingdao, Shandong, on 29 September 2016.

Air China will launch a flight between Chengdu, Sichuan, and Sydney, New South Wales, on 11 November 2016.

Both airlines will deploy Airbus A330 aircraft on the new flights. Both flights will initially be operated three times a week.

Qingdao is an important tourist destination. A former German colony, it is full of imposing Germanic government buildings as well as leafy commercial and residential districts.

Qingdao is best known for the eponymous Tsingtao Beer, which is spelled according to the old Wade Giles romanization system.

The brand has a factory in the city, which was built during the German colonial era.

A tour of the factory is one of the “must do” activities of any visitor to the city. I’ve taken the tour twice.

Not only is the tour fascinating, there is also a free flow of beer after it ends.

Best of all are the beer nuts, which are coated with residue from the manufacturing process. They are delicious and can only be purchased at the factory

The Annual Qingdao International Beer Festival is one of the city’s most important festivals, attracting beer enthusiasts from across the country and around the world.

A seaside resort, Qingdao has excellent beaches. It is a favoured summer getaway for top Chinese government officials because of its relatively mild summer weather.

Qingdao International Airport is also an important hub for Capital Airlines.

Passengers on the new flight will be able to transit to and from the following Chinese travel destinations at Qingdao Airport: Changsha, Dalian, Guangzhou, Haikou, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hohhot, Nanjing, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Taiyuan, Tianjin,  Wenzhou, Xi’an, and Urumqi.

Chengdu also serves as a transit point for travelers traveling to and from the following travel destinations in Western China: Kunming, Guiyang, Lanzhou, Urumqi, Xi’an, and Xining.

Air China already links Melbourne and Sydney with Beijing and Shanghai.

The airline plans to launch flights between Shenzhen and Melbourne before the end of the year.
