Now in its 43rd year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival showcases some of the world’s top artists and ensembles with 137 performances and 171 ancillary events from late February through late March.
The Hong Kong Arts Festival is the most important cultural event on Hong Kong’s arts calendar. Held over a 34 day period, performances run from opera and jazz to theatre and dance.
Running from 27 February through 29 March 2015, this year’s festival will feature such world renowned artists and ensembles as Bartoli, Carreras, Yo-Yo Ma, Glass, Masur, Chailly, Baryshnikov, Guillem, Spacey, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev, Bavarian State Opera, New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Zingaro, Royal Shakespeare Company, Moscow Art Theatre, and the People’s Art Theatre of Beijing.
Asian Premiere
One of the highlights of this year’s programme will be the Asian premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s breathtaking new proudction of Cinderella, which will be performed by the Dutch National Ballet.
In addition to showcasing world class performers from overseas, the Hong Kong Arts Festival also promotes Hong Kong’s own creative talents and emerging artists, commissioning and publishing new works in theatre, chamber opera, and contemporary dance.
Performed by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, A Hong Kong Story will tap into the essence of the city’s collective memory through ancient folk songs as well as popular ditties from the 1950s to the present.
Festival Plus
The Hong Kong Arts Festival also coordinates more than 100 Festival Plus activities, which are staged at locations throughout Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories.
Included are lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided tours.
