Hong Kong: German Artist Paints Victoria Harbour as Viewed from Hotel Windows

Art and Culture

German artist Jeannine Platz paints the Hong Kong skyline as viewed from the windows of the InterContinental Hong Kong as part of an art project that sees her visiting 11 cities around the world.

German Artist Jeannine Platz engaged in a Live Art Performance in the Lobby Lounge of the InterContinental Hong Kong on the waterfront in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui district on the evening of 11 August 2015.

The InterContinental Hong Kong is located along the shores of Victoria Harbour at the foot of Nathan Road  in Kowloon’s touristy Tsim Sha Tsui district.

The Lobby Lounge affords spectacular views of the Hong Kong skyline. While Jeannine was painting, patrons of the lounge were able to keep an eye on her progress over signature cocktails and yummy snacks.

Apparently the artist doesn’t suffer stage fright. Or perhaps she enjoys an audience.

The German artist also painted in her suite at the hotel as part of her worldwide “Suite View” art project, which is taking a look at some of the world’s most spectacular skylines as viewed from the windows of hotel suites.

The project seems part of a global trend. As hotels seek ways to create a distinct identity, they seem increasingly to be turning to art and artists to set themselves apart from the pack.

Round the World Tour

Hong Kong is just one of several stops on a whirlwind world tour, which is taking the artist from hotels in Europe to Asia, ending up in the United States.

The artist has already painted scenes from hotel rooms and lobbies in Istanbul, Turkey; Oslo, Norway; Frankfurt, Germany; and Hamburg, Germany.

After checking out of the InterContinental Hong Kong, the artist will fly to Shanghai, China.

Then she will be off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Los Angeles, California, finishing her world tour in New York, New York, which arguably has the world’s most famous skyline.

Can’t wait to see what the artist comes up with when she comes face to face with the Big Apple! And I wonder which hotel she will be staying at?

After Jeannine finishes her trip, she will present a large exhibition. An art book will also be published.

Hotels and Art

Hotels around the world have been taking an increasing interest in art in recent years.

In Hong Kong, the Langham Place Mongkok has a permanent collection of more than 1,500 pieces of contemporary Chinese art, which is on display in the hotel lobby, food and beverage outlets, guest floors, and spa.

Included are both paintings and sculptures. It is one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary Chinese art.

Housed in a beautifully renovated heritage building along the Bund, The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China, has an innovative Artist Residency programme, which allows artists from around the world to engage in artistic endeavours while residing at the hotel.

In Britain, the 45 Park Lane in London has launched street art tours of London’s East end. The hotel also has lots of contemporary British art on display and a exhibition gallery.
