Australia Tourism

Australia is one of the world’s top travel destinations, and some of Australia’s best vacation spots are in New South Wales (NSW). Sydney, Australia, the state’s capital, is also one of the world’s greatest cities.

So it’s no surprise that New South Wales attracted more tourists in 2015 than any other Australian state or territory. International arrivals grew by 8.9% to 3.6 million visitors, and domestic tourism grew by 3.8% to 7.5 million visitors.

“This is fantastic news for our tourism industry with important flow-on effects for the NSW economy, instilling business confidence, encouraging investment, and generating jobs and growth for our state,” says Stuart Ayres, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events.

“The NSW visitor economy is thriving. Not only has NSW received a record A$8.96 billion in international visitor spend, expenditure has grown by a record 20%, showing our hard work is paying huge dividends. Visitors from China spent A$2.6 billion, continuing incredible growth in this target market.”

As many of the best places to travel in Australia are situated in New South Wales, it is no surprise that NSW also retained its position as Australia’s most popular short-break travel destination for domestic travelers, attracting almost one-third of Australians taking short trips in 2015.

The most popular NSW regional destinations for short stay travelers were the South Coast (16% of visitors), the North Coast (16%), Hunter (12%), Central NSW (6%), the Central Coast (5%), and the Blue Mountains.

“In the past decade, the domestic short break market in NSW has grown by 11.8% with NSW maintaining the top position, beating other states and territories,” Stuart says.

“The popularity of short breaks in Regional NSW has ensured the state remains the top choice for short stays with short break arrivals to Regional NSW growing by 9.7% over the past decade alone.”
