Amazing Thailand
Huntsman Pub is a traditional British style pub, which is located in the basement of The Landmark Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road. One of the four-star hotel’s 10 food and beverage outlets, the pub’s talented band has a 25-year pedigree.
Pubs in Bangkok come and go and their popularity ebbs and flows, but one thing in the Thai’s capital’s eating out scene has remained constant for more than three decades: the Huntsman Pub in the basement of The Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit Road.
Huntsman Pub is a traditional British style pub serving some of the yummiest pub grub on offer in the Big Mango. Not only is the food great, the basement venue also has a popular band, which has passed the test of time.
I spent an enjoyable evening at the pub during a two-night hosted stay at The Landmark Bangkok.
The Ambiance …
To start with, the pub looks like a pub. Located in the basement, it’s suitably dark. And the dark wood paneling and medium brown leather booths only add to the ambiance.
Live sporting events are broadcast on seven LCD screens – does that include Premier League Football?
A large rectangular bars takes centre stage at the middle of the pub – except, of course, when the band is performing on the stage in one of the far corners of the pub. More on the band later, but first …
The Food …
Fish and Chips – the mouth-watering deep-fried battered cod was served with fries, malt vinegar, and minted peas on the side. Diners can opt for curly fries if they choose.
Bangers and Mash – two grilled Cumberland sausages were served atop velvety mashed potatoes with crispy fried onions and swimming in a savoury brown gravy.
Beef and Guinness Stew – a hearty Irish stew with big hunts of feef served with buttery carrots atop mashed potatoes. Diners can opt for conventional fries or curly fries. I opted for the mashed potatoes, and I was not disappointed.
Steak and Kidney Pie – there are several pies on the menu, but I decided to give the steak and kidney pie a miss when saw the server serving an Aussie tenderloin and some BBQ spareribs.
Aussie Tenderloin – grain-fed for 120 days, the 200-gram tenderloin steak was served with a mixed green salad and a choice of sauces.
BBQ Spare Ribs – saving the best for last, the meat fell off the bones of the slow-roasted pork ribs served with Cole slaw and potatoes and a home-made barbecue sauce. It doesn’t get any better than this. Could I have a straw, please?
The menu runs from traditional pub grub to snacks and starters, soups and salads, sandwiches and burgers, and succulent prime cuts.
There are also five kinds of pizza, four kinds of pasta, and two Indian curries. In a nod to the eatery’s location, it serves four classic Thai dishes.
If you’ve got any room left, you can finish off with ice cream, exotic Thai fruits, a cheese platter, or five decadent desserts.
My traveling companion and I decided to throw caution to the wind, sharing the rich dark chocolate cake, which was served with vanilla sauce, and the Huntsman brownie, which was served warm with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.
My feet started to itch, so I decided to burn off some calories on the dance floor! There is live music six nights a week, and I simply could not resist.
The Music …
Sweet Inspiration – talk about staying power! Sweet Inspiration has been crooning tunes from the 1980s and 90s for roughly 25 years!
They perform Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11.45 pm, finishing at 12.45 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Pedigree …
Anniversary Party – Huntsman Pub celebrated its 30th anniversary on 30 June 2017, so they must be doing something right. Regulars were invited for a roasted buffet dinner, which included wine, beer, and cocktails.
The Lobby Bar …
After having dinner at Huntsman Pub, I wasn’t ready to call it a night so I stopped at the hotel’s lobby lounge, Rendezvous Bar, where the duo band CSL from the Philippines was playing Motown covers.
The band has been performing there since 2016, and they play six nights a week, Monday through Saturday, from 7 pm to 11 pm.
I must say, I liked their style, and I liked their playbook. Nothing beats that Motown beat to end a perfect – if calorific – evening.
The Next Day …
Fortunately, the hotel houses a Fitness First outlet, so I was able to supplement those moves on the dance floor with a body combat class the next day.
And I can assure you, this is no run-of-the-mill hotel fitness room. This is a full-service gym with state-of-the-art equipment and a full complement of classes.
Next to having 10 food-and-beverage outlets, having such an amazing fitness centre would have to be this hotel’s unique selling point.
