Discover Chiang Rai: Thailand’s Cultural Highlands

wat rong khun, or White Temple, in Chiang Rai, Thailnd

Located in Thailand’s far north, Chiang Rai offers serene landscapes, vibrant hill tribe cultures, and ornate temples.

Its most famous temple is Wat Rong Khun, a.k.a. the White Temple—a dazzling contemporary masterpiece. With mirror mosaics, celestial motifs, and dreamlike architecture, it’s unlike any other temple in Thailand.

Chiang Rai is quiet alternative to Chiang Mai, offering a more contemplative experience—perfect if you’re seeking cultural immersion, wellness, and natural beauty.

Chang Rai made global headlines in 2018 during the dramatic rescue of a youth football team from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex, now a site of reflection and resilience.

Chiang Rai is served by Chiang Rai International Airport, which offers flights to Bangkok and other Thai cities.

  1. I’ve been to Thailand three times and absolutely love Chiang Rai. It has such a calm, authentic feel compared to busier places. That said, I’ve never had the chance to try glamping there. Tentawan Tented Camp looks like a beautiful mix of nature, comfort, and sustainability. It’s now firmly on my list for a future trip back to northern Thailand.
