Travelogue: Tacos Good Enough to Make Your Eyes Water

Balinese Adventure Part 17

A native Californian, Michael Taylor has a hankering for Mexican food during his stay in Seminyak . He discovers a taqueria whose tacos are so tasty that they actually bring tears to his eyes.

During my stay at Four on Drupadi on Jalan Drupadi No. 4 in Seminyak, Bali, I ask the concierge if she can recommend a good Mexican restaurant.

She tells me about a place called Taco Casa, which she says other guests have raved about it. I arrange for a driver to take me there the following day for lunch.

I order Chips and Guacamole, Crispy Beef Tacos, a Margarita, and Mineral Water. The Margarita and chips arrive first, and the guacamole is divine.

Crispy Beef Tacos

When I’m presented with the tacos, I like what I see. There are three of them, and they are stuffed full of hearty chunks of beef, fresh lettuce, chunky salsa, and cheese.

There is sour cream, shredded carrot, and black beans on the side. I pick one of the tacos up, I take a bite, and my eyes start to water.

“OMG!” I think. “It tastes just like home!”

Except that the corn tortillas are impossibly thin and perfectly fried. I don’t think that I have ever had tortillas this thin before. And they are proper tortillas that have been fried just before being served, and most definitely not taco shells.

A waitress approaches to ask if everything is all right. It’s a rhetorical question if ever there was one. From the look on my face she knows that I have died and gone to taco heaven. The taco actually brings tears to my eyes.

“Everything is just fine,” I say. “But could I please have another Margarita?”
