Japan in Cherry Blossom Season

japan-cherry-blorssom-forecast-2026
This chart is based on weather conditions in mid-December 2026. Estimates will inevitably change as Cherry Blossom season approaches. Consult the chart below for the latest updates.

Cherry blossoms, known as sakura in Japanese, are one of  Japan’s most iconic cultural symbols.

These delicate pink flowers represent beauty, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life, blooming for only a short time each spring.

When the blossoms appear, people across Japan gather for hanami, the centuries‑old tradition of gathering under the sakura trees to enjoy food and drink with family and friends.

Cherry blossom season in Japan is a sight to behold. In fact, cherry blossoms are deeply woven into Japanese art, poetry, and philosophy, making it not only a natural spectacle but also a cultural event that attracts millions of visitors to Japan each year.

Cherry blossoms typically bloom first in mid‑January in the country’s tropical south, but they don’t start blooming in  rest of the country until March or April.

This post will help you plan your trip so you can schedule your visit to Japan in cherry blossom season and experience the beauty of sakura at its peak.

How to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms

Hanami is Japanese for viewing flowers. But it specifically refers to the viewing of cherry blossoms in popular usage.

Cherry blossoms can be viewed up close – by examining a single blossom. You can also look at an individual tree or a small group of trees. Or you can view them from a distance. En masse, cherry blossoms can appear like pink or white clouds.

Some of the best spots to enjoy cherry blossoms in Japan are at the grounds of castles, shrines, or temples – or along the banks of rivers. They are often lit up a night, making a breathtaking spectacle. Picnics among the cherry trees are very popular in Japan.

Typically at least one person has to arrive early in the morning to reserve a good spot, with everyone one else showing up after they get off work.

When Do Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Japan?

The best times to view cherry blossoms in Japan start five to six days after they open. Cherry blossoms are considered to be opening when at least five to six flowers have opened on a sample tree.

The best viewing time is considered to be when at least 80% of the flowers on the tree are open. Their optimal viewing time is relatively short, lasting about one week, give or take a day or two.

Because cherry blossoms are fragile, they can be washed away by heavy rains or blown away by strong winds.

But their brevity and fragility add to their allure. Viewing cherry blossoms is called “haname” in Japanese, and it is a time-honoured pastime in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The Cherry Blossom Front

Cherry blossoms hold deep cultural meaning in Japan as symbols of beauty, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life.

Because hanami — the tradition of flower viewing — is so important in Japan, the timing of the blossoms became a matter of national interest.

To meet this demand, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) began issuing forecasts in 1951, first for the Kanto region and then nationwide by 1955. Because of their tropical climate,  Okinawa and the Amami Islands were not included.

Known as the Cherry Blossom Front, these forecasts chart the progression of blooming from south to north, known as sakura zensen in Japanese.

The Cherry Blossom Front is updated each year to facilitate travel planning and the scheduling of hanami gatherings.

Because of the vagaries of the weather, the Cherry Blossom Front often updated as the season approaches, but the exact timing of sakura blooms can never be guaranteed.
