Nestled in the foothills, the hotel was originally built as a private residence with money from the California Gold Rush. The property straddles the Oakland/Berkeley city limits.
The hotel itself is situated in Oakland, but the entrance and parking lot is situated in Berkeley – thus the Berkeley address.
Known variously as the Wedding Cake Hotel or the White Castle on the Hill, the Claremont Hotel has been an Eastbay landmark for more than a century.

In celebration of the hotel's centennial in 2015, the landmark hotel underwent a complete renovation of both the hotel rooms and public spaces.

Fairmont rooms measure 240 square feet or 22 square metres. They have king, queen, or double beds. They have hillside views.
Fairmont bay view rooms are similar except they have views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Deluxe rooms measure 295 square feet or 27 square metres. They have king beds, two double beens, a queen bed, or two queen beds. They have hillside or bay views.
Deluxe bay view rooms are similar except they and bay views. Some of them have queen-size sofa beds.
Signature rooms measure 310 square feet or 29 square metres. They have king or double beds and views of the bay.
Suites range from 385 square feet or 36 square metres for a junior suite (pictured above) to 600 square feet or 56 square metres for the Tower Suite or 1,700 square feet or 158 squre metres for the Presidential Suite.

Limewood Bar and Restaurant – pictured above, the Limewood Bar and restaurant serves mouth-watering dishes with regionally sourced ingredients. Don't miss the Dining on the Deck four-course dinner series with paired wines. An oyster bar has been added. Open for lunch and dinner. The bar remains open until midnight.
Meritage – this fine dining restaurant features grilled steaks and fresh seafood dishes prepared with artisanal locally sourced ingredients. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don't miss the Sunday branch.
Claremont Lobby Lounge and Bar – the best spot to watch the sun set into the sea through the Golern Gate over cocktails dating back to the pre-Ptohibition era. Don't miss the afternoon tea on Saturday and Sunday!
Bayview Cafe – casual poolside dining with a menu ranging from salads and sandwiches to hamburgers and healthy snacks.
The Fairmont Spa – measuring 20,000 square metres, the spa has 32 treatment rooms including two suites for couples, eucalyptus steam rooms, saline whirl pools, deluge showers, a full-service hair and nail salon, and relaxation areas.
The Club – there are three swimming pools, a kids club, 10 tennis courts, a 10,000 square metre gym, and more tha 90 classes per week.
The hotel has complete facilities for meetings, weddings, and other kinds of events.
Location, Location, Location
The Claremont Hotel and Spa is located at the foot of the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve in the beautiful Berkeley Hills.
While the hotel itself is situated within the city of Oakland, the parking lot, swimming pools, and tennis courts and entrance are located in Berkeley. The hotel, therefore, has a Berkeley rather than an Oakland address.
Thanks to the hotel's privileged location, it afford stunning views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
How to Get There
Driving from the Oakland Coliseum, take I-880 North to Highway 24 heading toward Walnut Creek. Take the Claremont Avenue exit, turn left onto Claremont Avenue. Turn right onto Ashby Avenue (5th stoplight). Ashby Avenue turns into Tunnel Road. The entrance of the hotel is two blocks ahead on the left.
