Sweden in September – is this a good time to visit?  Most Swedes have gone back to work or school. Since there are few tourists, hotels often lower their prices. Usually, the weather is pleasant in early September. But September can also be wet and windy. The good news is, the mosquitos are gone, making it a good time to go hiking, biking, or kayaking. If you want to see the Northern Lights, head to Swedish Lapland. They begin to appear in the far north as early as early September.

Apple Market – 19 September to 4 October 2026

The Apple Festival is all about apples in food and drink. And it attracts about 50,000 apple lovers each year. The traditional Apple Board will be held on the weekend of 28 and 29 September. But the Aftermarket continues for two full weeks, with apple painting, an apple exhibition, apple sales, and other activities. 

Svabesholms Kungsgård – Kivik, a village in southern Sweden with about 1,000 residents. Approximately 90 kilometers, or 55 miles, southeast of Malmö. The drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.


Skördefest Harvest Festival – 23 to 27 September 2026

Skördefest, the Öland Harvest Festival, is Sweden’s largest harvest celebration. Each autumn, the island of Öland transforms into a vibrant festival ground with farm markets, art exhibitions, food tastings, and cultural events. Visitors can enjoy local produce, crafts, and music while exploring the island’s villages and countryside.

Various venues – Öland, an island in the Baltic Sea with about 25,000 residents. Approximately 410 kilometers, or 255 miles, south of Stockholm. The drive takes about 5 hours, including bridge access from Kalmar.

  1. I was in Sweden with a friend last winter. And I can tell you one thing: I really needed warm clothes, especially wool sweaters 🙂 The temperatures there can sometimes be really low.
