Warriors Team History
The Golden State Warriors are a professional basketball team based in San Francisco, California, playing their home games at the Chase Center.
They compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the NBA and remain one of the league’s most successful franchises in recent years.
The franchise has a long and storied history, founded in Philadelphia in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors. They won two championships in the City of Brotherly Love in 1947 and 1956 before moving west to San Francisco in 1962. They initially played home games at the Cow Palace.
After the Oakland Arena opened in 1966, the team began splitting games between San Francisco and Oakland. In 1971, they relocated fully to Oakland and adopted the name Golden State Warriors to represent the entire state of California.
Originally, the idea was to play home games in several California cities, but that plan was scrapped, and the team settled on playing all home games in Oakland.
Oracle Arena became legendary for its deafening atmosphere, earning the nickname “Roaracle.” Even during long playoff droughts — including a 12‑year stretch without a postseason appearance — fans packed the stands, showing remarkable loyalty.
The unforgettable “We Believe” run in 2007, when the Warriors upset the top‑seeded Mavericks, captured the spirit of Oakland fans and remains one of the franchise’s most cherished moments.
The Warriors rewarded that loyalty with four championships in Oakland, winning titles in 1975, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Those victories cemented Oracle Arena’s reputation as one of the most iconic venues in NBA history.
In 2019, the team moved into the sleek, modern Chase Center in San Francisco. While the new arena offers world‑class amenities, many fans still recall the raw, raucous energy of “Roaracle” as unmatched.
The move across the bay ushered in a new chapter, capped by another championship in 2022 — the team’s first in San Francisco.
