Travel News
Boosted by booming economies across the region, air traffic in the Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a rate of 6.7% per year. The cruise industry will perform even better, registering 17% growth in the number of passengers.
As a result of this growth, travel destinations across the Asia Pacific are seeking partnerships and investment to upgrade infrastructure. The only thing missing is a commitment to minimize the societal and environmental impacts of this development.
If tourism accounts for 5% of global carbon dioxide emission, air transport represents 40% of that share.
As countries across the Asia Pacific pull out all the stops to cash in on the lucrative travel and tourism trade, scant attention has been paid to the environmental and societal price that unbridaled growth can bring.
Unlike the United States and the European Union, which have implemented an Emissions Trading System for aviation and offshore emissions rules for the cruise industry, there has been no coordinated effort to protect the environment in Asia.
