Australia: Nearly Half of Baby Boomers Travel Overseas Each Year

Travel Industry Analysis

A website survey of 2,500 Australian men and women aged 50 and over reveals that 83% of them travel across state lines.

Fully 47% of them, meanwhile, travel abroad at least once a year, the YourLifeChoices on line survey reveals.

In a related finding, statistics released recently by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicate that that Australians aged 60 plus are the fastest growing outbound sector. They are now three times more likely to travel abroad than they were 10 years ago.

Most Popular Foreign Destinations

  • 16% of respondents chose New Zealand as their most popular choice.
  • 15% picked the United States.
  • 14% favoured the United Kingdom.
  • Thailand was the most popular destination in Asia.

All of which raises an interesting question. If over 60s are the fastest growing travel demographic, why do travel ads tend to feature pictures of models in their 20s?

Would marketers be well advised to favour models closer in age to this fast growing market niche, or do older travelers relate – subliminally, at least – to younger models?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
